Modise retires from soccer

Cape Town – Banyana Banyana striker Portia Modise has announced her retirement from professional soccer with immediate effect.

According to Bafana Bafana’s official Twitter account, the 31-year-old hopes to create more players like herself with the national setup in the coming years.

“I want to thank the media for giving greater exposure to women football. I'm not lost to SA football,” said Modise.

“My wish among other things is to create 10 more Portia Modise within our national teams.”

South African Football Association president Dr Danny Jordaan has heaped praise on the player and sees the former Banyana striker as mentor to future stars.

“Portia Modise has scored more than 100 goals at international level. We are proud of her,” said Jordaan.

“This is a special moment. This is one player who knew how to get the ball into the net.

“Her new role will be to guide other players.”
