Sport24 reported that South African officials paid more than $10 million (R120 million) in bribes to host the 2010 World Cup and handed over a briefcase stuffed with $10 000 stacks of banknotes in Paris, a US indictment alleged on Wednesday.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said executives from soccer's governing body FIFA took bribes in exchange for voting for South Africa to become the first African nation to host the tournament.

According to African Football, The Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa confirmed that a media briefing will take place in order respond to all the allegations brought to light.

"The Minister of Sport and Recreation South Africa, Fikile Mbalula has noted statements by the US Department of Justice that allege bribes were paid to FIFA Officials for the selection of the 2010 World Cup host,” said the Official Twitter Account of the Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa.

"Minister Fikile Mbalula has been made aware of these allegations and will respond on Thursday, May 28. The response will be given by the Minister at the already planned Media Briefing that was communicated on May 25."

The time of media conference is yet to be announced.
