Cape Town – Orlando Pirates midfielder Mpho Makola admits that his Bafana Bafana call-up did not catch him off guard.
According to Soccer Laduma, Makola says that his consistency was bound to earn him a national call-up.
"I wasn’t really expecting a call-up, but I feel like I’ve been consistent every time I have played, you know," Makola told Soccer Laduma.
"Somewhere, somehow that must have caught the eye of the national selectors. I think it was about time.
"I wasn’t really shocked; I was just excited and happy. It was one of those moments where you say to yourself, ‘Finally!’ I gained a lot of experience being there for those 10 or so days. I got a lot of information.
"I mean, I was in the company of experienced, international players who were playing abroad. Obviously it’s a different environment there and it’s not like when you are with your team.
"You are surrounded by a lot of quality players and there is no room for mistakes. You have to be focused at all times. It was a great experience for me."
