Komphela 'suited' as assistant

Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Quinton Fortune felt that the national team's coaching job was too big for Steve Komphela to handle, it was reported on Friday.

Fortune felt that the current national caretaker coach would be better suited learning the trade as an assistant, he told the Business Day.

"If I had to recommend a coach for Bafana it would be (SuperSport United coach) Gavin Hunt and he would work with Steve Komphela," the former Manchester United player was quoted as saying.

"He (Steve) needs help because it is such a big job."

Fortune earned 46 caps for South Africa and was part of the Bafana squad for the 1998 and 2008 FIFA Soccer World Cup tournaments.

The SA Football Association (SAFA) on Thursday interviewed four of the five shortlisted candidates for the Bafana post vacated following the sacking of Pitso Mosimane last week.

In the list were Hunt, Gordon Igesund, Shakes Mashaba and Neil Tovey.

Komphela, who is at helm at Free State Stars in the Premier Soccer League, will present to the SAFA technical committee on Monday after completing his interim duties with Bafana, who play Gabon in an international friendly in Nelspruit on Friday.
