Komphela set to make changes

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana interim coach Steve Komphela says he will freshen his side ahead of their international friendly against Gabon in Nelspruit on Friday.

"Going to Mbombela Stadium], let's see if we cannot effect any changes," Komphela said on Tuesday.

"Why not give everyone an opportunity? It wouldn't be good to have a friendly and have to use the same players."

Bafana have played eight official games in succession without a win.

They drew 1-1 away to Botswana in their Group A 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifier on the weekend in Komphela's first match in charge.

This week, the side will be without rested captain Steven Pienaar, Bongani Khumalo, Thanduyise Khuboni, Oupa Manyisa and Katlego Mphela.

Forward Thulani Serero is back after recovering from an ankle injury which kept him out of the Botswana game.

The fixture against Gabon is critical in pulling the team out of their current slump.

"Representing South Africa is about honour and passion, and the players know that," said Komphela.

"Whether we like it or not, we will always get comparisons to other sporting codes.

"Don't call for change in the absence of option.

"Call for change when there's a need and a better option."

Komphela still expected more lessons to be learned for the future from his untested side against Gabon.

"Let's have a feel of (defender Eric) Mathoho, (strikers) Eleazar Rodgers, May Mahlangu, Lebogang Mokoena and Lehlohonolo Majoro," Komphela said.

"Why can't we give them a chance?

"Only through errors can one learn.

"Whatever the outcome, one has to be accountable."

While Bafana drew against Ethiopia at home and Botswana away, starting their road to Brazil on a poor note, Komphela still saw some hope.

"We still have Central African Republic to come to us, and we still have to go to Ethiopia," said Komphela.

"Botswana also still has to come to us."

Komphela, who coaches Free State Stars, is one of five shortlisted candidates for the vacant Bafana post.

He is expected to give his presentation to the SA Football Association's technical committee next week after completing his interim tasks.
