Josephs a 'prima donna'

2012-05-24 10:59

Johannesburg - Former South Africa goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has slammed Moeneeb Josephs's decision to retire from international football, branding the Orlando Pirates keeper a "prima donna".

Josephs, who played 19 times for Bafana Bafana, confirmed on Wednesday he is no longer available for national selection, citing family and fitness concerns.

However, Bucs teammate Benni McCarthy indicated in an interview that Josephs quit as he was frustrated at playing second fiddle to Bafana number one Itumeleng Khune.

And Baloyi, capped 24 times in a 15-year career, feels Josephs took the easy way out.

"We cannot condone what he's doing," Baloyi told IOL.

"He's behaving like a prima donna. He is basically intimating that he would only play for the national team if he's guaranteed to start, but that would be sending the wrong message to younger players.

"He should have striven to work harder and support Itu."

Baloyi added that he was often overlooked for the likes of Andre Arendse and Hans Vonk even though he was excelling for Kaizer Chiefs.

He said: "I played all the games at the 1998 African Nations Cup. Three months later I was on the bench at the World Cup in France. But I never behaved like this, even though that was painful.

"I never contemplated retirement because ultimately it was about what's good for the country. Moeneeb is clearly getting wrong advice.

"Being called for national duty is an honour and privilege, and I would never put selfish interests ahead of the country. We need to teach the current generation about patriotism because clearly that is lacking," concluded the 38-year-old.

Well brian that's what u say, khune coming from injury walking into 1st choice keeper, forgeting Sandillands,Williams,Josephs all performed beter than him if it was cricket or rugby you would b shouting for transformation, funny thoug if you noticed coloured players retire when there's an african coach is cause they being overlooked or is it cause we send strong signals they should retire

      Phora007 - 2012-05-24 12:02

I am a Kaizer Chiefs fan but i fully agree with Bruce Cloete. You get injured for certain months, when you come back, you are still considered for No 1 goalkeeper.Frankly speaking, that's not fair. What about those who kept performing while Khune was out for some months? I think Moeneeb didn't want to quit but was forced by the unfairness he sees.

      Cosmas - 2012-05-28 14:54

well put gents, we need professionalism in pitso which he clearly lacks, thts y he will never win anythng, bt dances frm his mediocre favourate players

  • marumobongani - 2012-05-24 11:23

I get your point mr baloyi but whats happening to josephs is unfair from champion winning side to be second to a man who's costing the national team every match that's funny why keep people capable of winning on the bench

  • marumobongani - 2012-05-24 11:23

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-24 12:25

You shoud not use mixit/bbm language... terrible.. Now what were you trying to say

      Cosmas - 2012-05-28 14:55

go back to skul, u moron

  • thapelo.devotion.mothibi - 2012-05-24 11:31

Aag come on Moneeb and Benni are average players Moneeb nearly cost us the league..... The only player i see marginalised here is DAINE KLATE TShabalala is not better than him, Benni is not better than Nomvethe,MONEEB is not better than Khune. I'm pirates by the way. This should be Benni's last season @ Bucs he's very divisive he will cost us more glory loop Benni.

      Heiku - 2012-05-24 11:40

By PSL standards Benni is $%#& HOT. How can you call yourself a pirates fan

      thapelo.devotion.mothibi - 2012-05-24 11:45

Or I call my self a pirates fan cause ui support Orlando Pirates the PSL champions hello?..I don't support individuals I support pirates. Moneeb is not better than khune period. DAINE KLATE is top class!

      Arthur - 2012-05-24 12:07

eeeesh thapaelo, you state that you suport/favour pirates the team . butthen you also favour khune above slimkat and Dain Klate. VERY CONFUSING

      thapelo.devotion.mothibi - 2012-05-24 12:14

Haahahahahah funny Arthur try and qoute me on your next post you'll understand exactly what I wrote lol. Stop reading like you reading kwaito lyrics lol...

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-24 12:28

Thapelo perhaps you dont know but Benni has a champions league medal, Does any of the other prima donnas from Chiefs and pirates have anything that resembles it. You're right about Klate and what about Kermit? And what about all the Cape boys that are constantly overlooked.

      thapelo.devotion.mothibi - 2012-05-24 12:39

Is that what this is about? All the cape boys? What about the Rustenburg boys? Bloefontein boys? Eastlondon boys? Come on guys you earn a call up moneeb earned it but ditched it. As Uefa medal that was a porto TEAM medal he can't win a medal alone plus he was on the bench on that final why didn't he ditch the team then BENNI.

      Zenzile Tshanda - 2012-05-24 12:40

take a closer look at the goals he conceded against arrows. what about the one he conceded against supersport.

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-24 14:06

Thapelo..he never played a part for Porto on the way to the final. Lets have a look at the prima donna players that made it in Europe/UK. How many of them really succeeded. Dont kid yourself. The okes who made it Mark Fish, Radebe, Arendse, Fortune, Pienaar, BENNI, is a few that comes to mind.. and the most of the other okes FAILED some miserably.. Joseph is a great shot stopper and frankly overlooked for an actor.. As for the fact that guys get overlooked from other areas, it is a known fact that if you dont play for Pirates and Chiefs no matter how crap you are you will get to play for Bafana. That is why our national team is .....crap

      thapelo.devotion.mothibi - 2012-05-24 14:56

It is YOUR KNOWN FACT Stormkaap, khune had a few offers overseas but have to turn them because they were not financially viable for him,Moneeb never attended any trials nor did we hear any overseas offers on him,he nearly cost us the league by his useless diving and fistings he shud thank our Defence his Average player maan. Andre arendse?

      Cosmas - 2012-05-28 14:58

khune failed his trials becoz he is substandard, ahg man, cnt u get it, u chiefs fan puting on a pirates shirt coz u r embarrased

  • setaba1 - 2012-05-24 11:33

    Benni is behind this.

  • Ricardo - 2012-05-24 11:34

Smart choice Josehps, and I think Sandilands will follow, who wants to pray for your teammate to get injured,in place for you to get game time

  • moshoeu.lebza - 2012-05-24 11:39

clearly moenib is been given advices by an old guy whos not even the favourate for national team which is bernie,i mean thats the lame xcuse he brought abt nt being included in the starting line up,y cnt he work hard so that he cn be selected as number 1 keeper,mcCathy is misleadin him n hes regret quitin to play for the nation...

  • thapelo.devotion.mothibi - 2012-05-24 11:55

Some just comment they don't even watch PSL, the hottest player in the League currently is NOMVETHE that's why his nominated @ almost all PSLawards. Benni made QUINTIN FORTUNE quit BAFANA and he(fortune) later regret the Move when the WC was Here. Leave Moneeb Pitso.

      Heiku - 2012-05-24 13:26

I agree with Nomvethe selection for bafana. He is better. Benni is still hot by PSL standards. Klaar punt.

  • brian.heunis - 2012-05-24 11:56

"He should have striven to work harder and support Itu." Stiven?

      Heiku - 2012-05-24 15:25

I support that new word. It makes sense. It means to strive toward something :)

  • Christopher - 2012-05-24 12:03

Good advise from Brain Baloyi.Joseph is running away from the point cos what he need is to become number one goelkeeper.I don't know what is the problem with this guys from cape town.

      Arthur - 2012-05-24 12:28

Before calling people prima donna's he Brain Baloy should look at himself. He left chiefs after Khune became the number one goal keeper, he also threatened retirement at Sundown’s after Wayne Sandilands became the first choice keeper.

      Arthur - 2012-05-24 12:36

"I dont know what is the problem with this guys from cape town." Maybe there is a problem within the squad maybe these guys has the balls to say you know enough is enough and that players should be picked on merrit and not because of favoritisme and racial bias.

  • Victor - 2012-05-24 12:05

I feel looking on his behalf he is a champion n he is used to winning things n now he feels he can't go there to sit on the bench n in that way he is not given a fair chance cos come to check even Khune himself is nowadays n ordinary keeper based on that our national team coach shud atleast give other guys a chance, that been said I think its his personal choice to retire n we shudnt worry much if its true he is no beta keeper than khune, just my opinion but a fact

  • Rhulani Mabunda - 2012-05-24 12:06

Baloyi you are 100percent,He should have aorned the call

  • Nkonzo Mabaso - 2012-05-24 12:17

come on Josephs, act lyk a profesional. We stl need u in da squad, don get bad influence frm ada ppl.Its a honour 2 play 4 yo country

  • Madlozi Gwebu - 2012-05-24 12:19

i feel for josephs but he should have spoken to the coach before resigning not resign and want to speak to the coach we have 1 national team only one goal keeper can play at a time bennie has always been a bad influence and his not patriotic about his country

      Arthur - 2012-05-24 12:24

Based on media reports he wanted to speak to the coach , but the coach told him to firsrt write a letter. Why what type of manger does that unless he wanted you out.

  • Phora007 - 2012-05-24 12:24

I am a Kaizer Chiefs fan but i understand Moeneeb 's problem. My point is: Khune gets injured and nurses his injury for certain months, when he comes back he still occupies his No 1 position. How do you see that? This means players are no longer selected on merit.Remember,Khune had been inactive for some months, while other goalkeepers kept on performing.I think Moeneeb feels that even if it wasn't himself but somebody else who kept on performing should have been selected ahead of Khune.

      Victor - 2012-05-24 12:29

My sentiments exactly cos Moneeb is bn doing well for his club n coming to look @khune's latest perfomances he is not beta

  • vincent.dekay - 2012-05-24 12:31

  • Ndira - 2012-05-24 12:49

Baloyi just wants attention at the expense of slimkat, he's bored from getting paid for doing jack sh*t....Slimkat made his desicion whether you agree or not one should respect it. I like it for the pirates....

  • Elaine - 2012-05-24 12:53

Nobody wants to be the last choice, i support Josephs decision. Bond with your family Broer!

He simply is not the best goalkeeper. He's good but not good enough.

  • Ziggamann - 2012-05-24 13:20

If I was a Cat I would also be upset to sit on the bench and watch a younger puss play

      nkosinathi.dyantyi.9 - 2012-05-30 08:07

  • nhle.mngadidlamini - 2012-05-24 13:39

You did the right Josephs, I'm a 100% behind you. If you are not being appreciated there is absolutely no need to stick around!!!

  • zintle.b.sijeku - 2012-05-24 13:59

I respect your decision Josephs. Every one has a right to make a decision and stick to it. To those who don't agree with him have to grin and bare it cause he has made his choice and believes in it.As if you guys would stay in a job were you feel your not appreciated. You will feel misrable and fustrated all the time which will impact on your personal life i understand you boy wish you all de best

      Arthur - 2012-05-24 14:16

agree 100%, plus I think he has done the team a favour because there will be a chance for a younger keeper to get some experience. People dont realise that in 2014 he will be 34. Rather then having to start from scratch, I would prefer a young keeper travelling to the world who can take over from khune.

      lynda.manxiwa - 2012-05-24 14:17

I would have done the same as we....... I would also rather spend time with my family than to warm the bench all in the name of prefessionalism....... I respect him for having the guts to say no to the money...... I doubt any of these players would play if it was not involving money and we at Pirates are used to winning and with the selection for the national team I doubt we will qualify for 2014.

  • Maswazi - 2012-05-24 14:49

Baloyi u cost the national team nd for that u were relegated to the bench. SLAM has never been awarded for his hard work. But I don't blame anyone coz some players are selected while they are bench warmers to their respectful teams. If players where really selected on Merit the likes of Mphela,Khumalo,Serero,Shabalala nd Gaxa wouldn't be there. They'll be replaced by Classen,Xulu,SOMMA nd Klate. Well done SlAM

  • matvee111 - 2012-05-24 15:11

let's be honest...we can't compare josephs & khune...josephs is a wack keeper,Pirats has been winning cos they've got the experience of Benni,a tight defence and a solid midfield...Josephs shudn't even be Bafana's no.2....he's been overlooked with good reason.

  • matvee111 - 2012-05-24 15:12

Hi Thapelo , pirates supporter , i'm not a soccer fan but managed to watch most of top teams games. U seamed very emotional about the game. Winning is all about scoring goals and Benni did that most of the times for cubs.Do whats gud for development.

      nkosinathi.dyantyi.9 - 2012-05-30 08:29

Dom kat sty at ur home we have goal kippers beter thn u we have khune, brilliant goalie frm s.s united

  • Samuel - 2012-05-25 16:54

you are damn crazy Baloyi put your self into MONEEP shoes, how many titles has khune won?he has been in and out because of injuries but he is always number 1 the problem here is Pitso well done Slim Kat i wish and pray other players learn from you

      Cosmas - 2012-05-28 15:02

i hear u man, pitso must b fired, he has jus 2 much nepotism, bafana nids a coach with national team experience, pitso is jus 4 supersport, he wont win anythng wit bafana, i bet on tht!
