Igesund plays down Polish loss

2012-10-13 08:05

Warsaw - South Africa's new coach Gordon Igesund on Friday played down their 1-0 defeat by Poland in a friendly, saying the result was not the issue as the Bafana Bafana prepare to host the Africa Cup of Nations.

"Poland scored the goal that counted at the end. Obviously we're disappointed," Igesund told reporters at Warsaw's Kazimierz Gorski Stadium.

But he said the match - one of the Bafana Bafana's rare out of competition encounters with a European side - had always been about honing his squad.

"It was a tough toss for us tonight, because I tried out a couple of players, I made some substitutions, I brought in some young boys in the side who're making their debut. So overall I think I achieved what I wanted to get out of this game," Igesund explained.

"We're doing the preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations and I think it's important for us to focus on that. I'd rather lose these games, as long as the players learn something from it, from those little situations. We'll be that much better prepared when we get to the games that count," he said.

The performances of both Poland and South Africa flagged up defensive and attacking weaknesses, but the Poles snatched the winner in the 82nd minute.

"Overall, it's a good learning experience. These are the places to learn these kind of situations. You need games like this, the players will grow from here," said Igesund.

"We know where we went wrong," he added.

The Poland match, followed by a trip to Kenya on Tuesday, are crucial for South Africa's countdown to the Africa Cup of Nations.

With an automatic hosts' berth at the January 19-February 10 showcase, they have to rely on friendlies to get ready.

After the fall of the country's Apartheid regime enabled them to enter the international arena, South Africa earned a reputation as continental powerhouses, winning the 1996 African tournament.

But their star has fallen since 2002, with the 2010 World Cup on home turf proving a disappointment as they exited in the group stage.

Fifty-six-year-old Igesund, a highly successful manager in top South African clubs, was named national coach in June.

His side started their Africa Cup of Nations preparations last month by losing 1-0 in Brazil and beating Mozambique 2-0 at home.

Having brought a 26-man squad to Poland, he said he wanted to use the short time available to build a solid starting side by January.

"I looking for the players who can come to the next level," said Igesund.

Among the new faces, he singled out for praise 26-year-old defender Ricardo Nunes, a South African-born former Portugal youth player.

He made his South Africa debut in Warsaw.

Nunes, of Slovak club Zilina, is one of the few South Africa internationals who ply their trade abroad.

Good game. But where is Somma coach or someone like him, a holding stricker? We need a strong striker who can feed the ball 2 Parker, Myeni and the other quick guys.

      johannes.p.nel - 2012-10-13 08:18

      think Somma is still injured

      hamish.drake1 - 2012-10-13 09:50

I actually think the last 2 games have shown a vast improvement. We created chances on goal and should have had a penalty. That defense worries me though. If not Khuene, we would have lost by plenty. The back 4 gave him no protection all night. As for the goal, WTF!. On the left side we have 3 defenders on a single attacker(who still gets the cross in). The penalty area becomes a 1on1 and the back post defending was a complete joke. We may not score plenty, but ffs if we give goals like that away, we stand no chance.

  • kndobe - 2012-10-13 08:23

Igesund must be carefull here otherwise he will lose the plot, players like Mngomeni, Yeye, lebese do not deserve to be there at all. at this level the coach should be looking at tactics and combinations and there is no time for fixing player weaknesses that is the clubs coach's job. Miyeni is not ready yet and nunez will get used to the other players and to me is better than punch. Furman is not a holding midfielder, he is good when going forward and is not selfish which is why i like him and i think him and jali would complement each other very well and KG should be benched. Shabalala ?? no comment and it would be unfair to comment on strikers at this moment.

      elyaas.samsodien - 2012-10-13 09:41

Fair comment bro...too many misplaced passes when getting close to goal. Motivation and directness as in brazil match missing last nite.

  • nico.eksteen.7 - 2012-10-13 08:47

SA won't win anything unless they get a world class striker from somewhere. This has been the problem with SA soccer forever.

  • joko.makhoba - 2012-10-13 08:47

bafana bafana will always, always disappoint. khune and nunes were outstanding and the rest can go to hell..

  • Truth.nnete - 2012-10-13 08:56

BafanaBafana and proteas are blood brothers, they have so much in common.Always look promising but disappointing where it matters.

all that i can say is I really hope Gordon and his charges will be ready come Afcon 2013 coz expectation is already there if one look at his track record. The Poland game was absolute rubbish but then again he is building a squad not to compete but to WIN the Afcon...I will definitely name and shame the culprits against Polska...Nunes,Mngomeni,KG....Myeni must show me his true play against Kenya and not dive 5min after being tripped nogal in penalty area...i expect ne less than 3 goals against our next opposition and no more rubbish talk of building a team thereafter...if you want to be a soldier then u should also fight/die like one on the field...

      rankees.moka - 2012-10-13 09:18

Cum on chris giv de boys a break, de coach has brought bac de glory days in de sguad

  • Papi Alfred Lemeko - 2012-10-13 09:17

mungomeni does not deserve to play for da national team, take him out we have players like moleko and matlaba who can do better than him

  • bbooyse - 2012-10-13 09:40

A year or two back I would have been negative too but I'm actually impressed by how much Bafana has improved.. International friendlies are there precisely for trying new players and tactics and hopefully the boys learned something. Come Bafana, we know what you can do.. Time to step up to the plate :)

  • kgatla.clico - 2012-10-13 09:41

  • lenox.ntlantsana - 2012-10-13 09:55

Deep down South Africans know that the score was even should the late goal was allowed (which I think it was a goal) well done Bafana (Igesund)

  • HandsOfDj5 - 2012-10-13 09:58

Igesund! You must know that next year, we expected you to give us only wins no looses by then no more playas who're selfish or who're not mental tough as they shld be there to 1 of world class.

  • alan.ingram.355 - 2012-10-13 09:58

The pathic Bafana Bafana will NEVER win a game until they change from their racist way and start playing players of ALL races.... sad but true !! An ex footballer

      johannes.p.nel - 2012-10-13 10:30

      coming from a racist

      justice.mokotjo - 2012-10-13 12:08

Go and play rugby ingram,u know nothing about soccer leave it to us.

      hamish.drake1 - 2012-10-13 13:54

I disagree with Alan completely. The best players in the starting 11, finish. As for your idiotic comment "Justice", can you really be that dumb?

  • sam.ntshangase - 2012-10-13 10:07

Coach plse don't make so much changs maan introduce players step bi step give them three mins. Myeni,Yeye, Shaba,Mngomeni nono nt 4 BB material. Where is Maluleka, Hlompo Kekana n Thami nt these goats

  • Bafana Joseph - 2012-10-13 10:28

SA let's invest on Ruby sport

      kndobe - 2012-10-13 11:18

Have you watched the Rugby lately?, don't even go there

  • hummy.ramukhuvhathi - 2012-10-13 10:37

Welldone Banafa... your play was good.

  • Dipzen - 2012-10-13 10:39

I think we show a lot of promise in the attacking department but we still need to score a holding central forward would help. Sucks that davide somma isn't fit for national duty yet. Overall I think if we had serero yesterday the game would have been a lot different in terms of score. Still a bit pessimistic about shabba and yeye's inclusion in the squad but overall I'm happy with the squad and its performance.

  • kingsley.mokomane - 2012-10-13 10:45

I thought Gordon will prove us wrong but he is indeed not national coach material but is more of PSL material. He is not strategic at all - look at his selection, no strategy. He is not inspirng at all. Khompela and Dr can do much better. Find a winning combination soon or else go back to Swallows

  • musa.dlamini.359 - 2012-10-13 12:06

When bafana was attacking they were slow and made wrong decisions however when poland was attacking they were quick and moved the ball swiftly to the right players in the right areas of the field. Defensively we were shocking, especially at left-back. To me it also seems like we short on attacking midfielders because at one point we had three defensive midfielders on the field! We need more attack-minded players in the midfield and an out and out striker. Hopefully the team improves as time goes on.

No matter what people can say, Gordon is the best coach here in SA. 100% behind you gordy, I believe in your team building strategy!

  • justice.mokotjo - 2012-10-13 12:15

Gordon is doin a great job, just that he selected pirates players who only score goals on the 90th minute,we dnt nid that.

  • luvo.luvos - 2012-10-13 12:28

The game was a yawn. Bafana looked like they did under Pitso, dead on their feet. This game was unlike Igesund's previous two.

  • luvo.luvos - 2012-10-13 12:30

The game was a yawn. Bafana looked like they did under Pitso, dead on their feet. This game was unlike Igesund's previous two. I was already sleeping in my couch by the time the goal was scored.

  • joseph.mantsoe - 2012-10-13 12:53

Despite the loss Gordon is doing the great job for Bafana-Bafana. Let's rally behind him and stop complaining the credit must be given where it's due. Period

  • tebohobongane.parkies - 2012-10-13 13:23

Only five players seemed to have fighting spirit from the South African side in that match played against Poland`itumeleng Kune,Parker,Davide Furman,Shabangu,Ricardo Nunes, they played very well!the goal scored against us has to be given to our right back who was just dreaming during the game`the opponent came behind him and lost the game!!

  • floccino - 2012-10-13 13:23

I give our players credit for yesterday's match, even the goal came after our defenders forgot that they had to defender their teritory otherwise it would be 0-0 draw.

  • khachane.thejane - 2012-10-13 23:43

Let all Bafana critics give both the team and coach, fair time before judging them. It's also better not to compare the previous coach(es) with the present one. The media, especially those who support coach Igesund must stop defending him, it is rather early to do so. And this should be done to all national teams and coaches for the country to succeed.

  • matvee111 - 2012-10-15 05:23

what to say really,if we're going to use lousy players like Modise, who's team is winless & bottom of the log, what do we expect. Even if bafana Bafana won the AFCON tournament...being the best in Africa is simply not good enough...The aim should be the bigger picture...aim at European teams and aspire to do well in any world cup...a loss has become OK,draws are celebrated..simply not good enough
