Igesund picks his assistants

2012-07-10 15:30

Johannesburg - Thomas Madigage has been named assistant to Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund.

Madigage, the long-serving SuperSport United assistant coach, was the first-choice candidate for the position, Igesund said on Tuesday.

"There were many great candidates that I considered, but I am delighted that Tommy has accepted this position," Igesund said in a statement.

"I look forward to working with him with immediate effect."

SAFA chief executive Robin Petersen thanked SuperSport for releasing Madigage at short notice for national duty.

"We are grateful to the club for allowing us to take Tommy into our national team structures," Petersen said.

"We realise this has a negative impact on them, but we applaud them for allowing us to put the country first."

Meanwhile, Serame Letsoaka was appointed as second assistant coach for the national team's training camps, and Alex Heredia was named goalkeeper coach.

Fanyana Sibanyoni, the chairman of SAFA's technical committee, said Igesund had requested that a reference group be put in place to provide "input and support".

The reference group would consist of Shakes Mashaba, who had been in line for the head coach's job, Clive Barker and Jomo Sono.

"We are delighted with this 'brains trust'," Sibanyoni said.

"They will assist the coach as needed by him. Gordon recommended this panel to us, and we are convinced that this panel will provide him with the necessary support he needs in getting the best out of the team."

if the team is to succeed, then our support is what`s needed first. having a negative perspective to any new development hinders progress. lets be proud of our capabilities, what we can do and deliver. good luck to gordon!!!!

Please just excuse Jomo Sono from this reference group thing. Bra J is highly overrated as a coach. Let him focus on Cosmos, please!!!

Good move to posetive direction, with the envolvement of a AFCON winner, Run-up and the first coach that had taken SA to a youth final (U20) and later to the very first Olimpic games in Soccer, however I personnaly belive the structure of the team "players" has to be changed, some players do not deserve to be on the team, complancecy players have to be removed and replaced, then we will be victorious.

I write today with joy and support dat thomas zcc Madigage has been chosen to assist gavin. I agree that the gentlemen is more patient of all people i have seen is team management, for example neil tovey he has been favoured to assist gavin but iif u gave show me any cup he has won as a manager for both thanda and amazulu nothing but throwin them to relegation. Thomas is good and we have trust that he will take our beloved bafana to new heights. As for dat badge and cap thomas it must go u repreesnt all south africans not a religius group.

Fantastic Gordon. Very good selections. I think that you will need full time Talent Search person as well. This person will have to view all encumbents in all levels of the leagues to find the best players. And also choose 15-20 new playes to run full 2/3 week coaching clinics to guide players to improve and prepare for call-up to natioal squad. Here all the prospects can be coached in Bafana techniques and Strategies.
