Fanteni: I want Bafana return

Johannesburg - Ajax Cape Town forward Thembinkosi Fanteni is eager to be back in the Bafana Bafana fold by the end of the year.

The 26-year-old has failed to cement a regular berth in the national team squad since making his debut in 2007.

However, Fanteni wants that to change and has set a personal deadline of December for his next call-up.

"I have already said to myself that the target is December to be back with the national team," the former Maccabi Haifa star told Football365.co.za.

The Paarl-born striker has done his chances of a phone call from Pitso Mosimane no harm in these early stages of the campaign.

A brace against Moroka Swallows on Wednesday night has kick started his season and Fanteni has revealed his delight at finding the back of the net.

He said: "I'm very happy, I didn't expect to start so well. Last season I was injured and I didn't play so much, so I surprised myself."

While Fanteni, who scored his first ever international goal against Equatorial Guinea in 2008, is obviously happy with his two goals, he is trying to deflect the praise away from himself and on to the team.

"I know that as a striker I am judged by the amount of goals I score, but for me it is not that important. As long as we are winning as a team I will be very happy," he continued.

After the Urban Warriors' impressive start to the new season - six points from two games - the early talk is that they could well be title contenders.

However, Fanteni believes SuperSport United could be in for their fourth successive triumph, while at the same time he backs the big boys from Soweto.

"I think SuperSport can (win the league), but they have lost some of their key players. Maybe Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs could win it," he added.
