'Drunk' SA star in hot water

2011-03-29 07:13

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela was arrested early on Monday morning for drunk driving after a weekend of celebrations, reports the Sowetan.

The star player, known by the nickname "Killer", scored the national soccer side's only goal in their win against Egypt on Saturday at Johannesburg's Ellis Park Stadium.

Mphela, who lives in Midrand, was apprehended in the Sandton suburb of Sandown at about 02:50 on Monday after police stopped him driving erratically in an Audi S3.

The Sowetan understands that before his arrest, Mphela had been partying with friends at the Garden Of Eden nightspot in Rosebank, northern Johannesburg, and was believed to have been on his way home when police stopped him.

Police officers took him to the police station, where they detained him for several hours before taking a blood sample.

The 27-year-old was released on bail of R1 000 and was warned to appear in the Randburg magistrate's court later this year when his blood alcohol test results would be finalised.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed that Mphela was arrested on charges of drunk driving and will be appearing in court in August.

Took blood seven hours afterwards ? He would get off scott free, thay needed to do it in two hours time....WTF !!!

      JustinC. - 2011-03-29 07:46

"...they detained him for several hours..." Several not seven. But I agree, if you break the law, you should get punished, not get preferential service.

      DeonL - 2011-03-29 09:18

They waited probably 3 or 4 hours to give him time to get within the limits. At least he saved us from a miserable weekend but should have called a taxi

      Louise Beetge - 2011-03-30 04:38

      It pays to be famous!!!!!

      AJ - 2011-03-30 08:01

@Michel: Can you explain why a popular member of the national team of the most popular sport in the country did NOT have his blood taken within 2 hours (as would have happened to us), but rather hours later? Sorry, but it is you who are part of the problem....

      Patriot - 2011-03-30 08:23

@Sue: I doubt its got to do with colour. Other sportsman of the "wrong" colour have also gotten off before. I've even heard of normal people of the "right" and "wrong" colour getting off. Then I've also heard of sober people being detained for no reason. Guess it depends on who the cop is and not who the culprit is.

      AlphaOne - 2011-03-30 09:55

@sue, what does his colour have to do with it??? I don't see them arresting people of only a particular race. Maybe him being a sports celeb got him some better treatment, but they did arrest him. Afterall, they could have asked for an autograph and let him go - or escourt him home.

      lenand40 - 2011-03-30 17:58

@Sue Last I head, Jacque Kallis was white

      IandI - 2011-03-29 07:58

What is it with drunken sports stars and this german car, Audi R8 for Kallis. Audi A3 for Mphela? Awful driving as they clearly can't handle these cars or their alcohol.Throw the booka t them. We all all equal before the law. Yeah, right.

      Munyai - 2011-03-29 08:00

What a role model! If he stayed on the road any longer I'm sure he would have lived up to his nick name - "killer".

  • bushyyboyy - 2011-03-29 08:23

I HAVE ALWAYS ASKED MYSELF THIS QUESTION > IF DRINK AND DRIVING IS REALLY ILLEGAL THEN WHY METRO COPS DONT GO SIT NEXT TO ALL PUBS AND CHECK EVERY INDIVISUAL DRIVING OUT OF THE PLACE FOR ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION EXCEEDING THE LIMIT..IF YOU TAKE A DRIVE ANYWHERE IN THE CITY AT NIGHT THERE IS ALWAYS CARS PARKED OUTSIDE THE CLUBS ,OBVOUSLY THE OWNERS ARE DRINKING THEN AUTOMATICALLY IT QUALIFIES THEM FOR DRINK AND DRIVING...

      jmokgotlhoa - 2011-03-29 08:50

      you are shouting

      Janine - 2011-03-29 09:00

      AlphaOne - 2011-03-30 09:59

If SA had safety, and a good public transport system, people won't have to take their vehicles to pubs and clubs.

      matla - 2011-03-30 10:09

@Robinhood - like picking their noses in public

      Woseck - 2011-03-31 05:43

THAT IS EXACTLY WHY YOU HAVE DECOY DRIVERS MY FRIEND!!! THE LAST ONE LEAVING THE BAR IS THE DECOY, COS ALL THE COPS ARE WAITING FOR HIM!!!

  • palmerdman - 2011-03-29 08:31

The "Killer" is lucky he did not kill himself or worse someone else. And they're talking about banning liquor ads? It will never have any impact with irresponsible behaviour from our "national heroes". And this is who our kids look up to and aspire to be like? If it was me driving i would probably still be in jail. And R1000 bail? The guy should have paid R10000. Justice system is a joke...they never fail to prove me right!

  • Harold - 2011-03-29 08:36

"In hot water" He should have been put in cold water to sober up.

      donaldmadibana - 2011-03-29 09:13

      Janine - 2011-03-29 09:01

A allegedly drunk human being driving on public roads.

  • Thiboza - 2011-03-29 08:48

Detained for several hours before taking blood samples, I wont be suprised if he comes out clean on this one. He is said to have been driving erratically but there is no charge regarding that, makes you wonder if people are allowed to drive erratically if they are not drunk. Mphela in the tabloid world - : Refused to pay to enter a Night club in PTA and resorted to Drinking from his cooler box outside. He was assaulted by a certain guy outside a PTA club in a scuffle about Parking. He was in a fight over a girl at some Party, a firearm was mentioned. Was AWOL at Sundowns only to be spotted at a Sushi party. Maybe he needs help(proffesional).

  • hmosito1 - 2011-03-29 08:56

    From a hero to zero

  • Mzi - 2011-03-29 09:12

He is also a normal person like u n me.

      Ockert - 2011-03-29 10:59

Then he should receive the same treatment as you would ?

      matla - 2011-03-30 10:13

@Ockert - incorrect use of the question mark, idiot

      Colin - 2011-03-30 10:22

Umm NO Matla..English one O one. The question mark is correct and appropriate. He is posting the comment in a question form, i.e. Asking of Mzi would not agree. Before you accuse people of being idiots, make sure you understand the context of their statement..

  • Straight Forward - 2011-03-29 09:28

Don't forget that this happens to a lot of other people as well, so leave him alone

  • Bafana - 2011-03-29 10:11

Beeees du plessis or whatever the surname got drunk and killed a metro cop by throwing him to the ground head first and then said wake up you are strong. Killer did not kill anyone and you idiots are talking too much.

      Dessy - 2011-03-29 15:51

Its not about Bees du Plessis its bout Killer who could have killed another innocent person on the road you Idiot, did you smoke something or what. Seems you condone drunk driving, the law is for everyone, he is not above the law or critisizim because he's a soccer player. The highest trees get the most wind.

      Peter - 2011-03-29 16:57

Does not make a difference. drunk driving is illegal even if you don,t kill any one. One case is drunk driving, the other one is murder both cases should be dealt with appropriately

      peace_piece - 2011-03-30 09:12

I agree - this shouldn't even be on the news. Only reason is to discredit him and make him look bad.

      jan du preeaz - 2011-03-30 20:26

now how is this realited to drunk driver idiot

  • asemahle.mavuka - 2011-03-29 14:45

  • Bhekizizwe - 2011-03-29 14:48

yekani u Killer "mphela" phansi.....but don't drink and drive.

  • reader4444@24.com - 2011-03-29 16:15

He was "in an Audi S3" -- nothing to indicate the car is his. "Drunk" sports people who drive sponsored cars should be severely punished, as should the sponsors -- in this case Audi or whoever. Frist hang your head in shame then confiscate the frigging car and auction it, and give the money to charity. He can then take his chances on taxis

      Peter - 2011-03-29 20:04

Er how do you know whether it is sponsored or his own

  • Frangipani - 2011-03-29 16:36

Aag come on guys the guy was celebrating..hands up those who celebrate with non alcoholic drinks? eish....you all lying!!!

      francoisengelbrecht1 - 2011-03-29 17:12

I don't have a problem with him celebrating and drinking. He deserves to after his goal. But then he shouldn't be driving!

  • snake dr - 2011-03-30 01:00

that was not arrest they were taking autographs, and when they realised they were gonna get into trouble, they took his blood sample after hours of interviewing him! Ja neh our police shame, they just bafana fans! Lol

  • CITIZEN - 2011-03-30 02:06

corruption all the way they did it on purpose first he refuse to go play for sundowns now he drink because he score a goal for bafana bafana and like everybody say will get off scoot free mpela you a irresponsible person and deserved to go to jail

  • akash.dowra - 2011-03-30 08:20

If I remember correctly they did the same thing for Jacques Kallis when he drove into his gate... Sue, I didn't see any of your comments then. It is not a race thing, obviously the police in this country love their sport. In both cases though I agree it is not acceptable.

  • peace_piece - 2011-03-30 09:10

I can't blame Katlego - this should seriously just be dropped. On the one hand people are saying the guy that chopped off the heads of 4 rapists did the "right thing" and now a national hero should not be given any slack. Katlego - you played well, just don't do this again. Now go home.

  • jan du preeaz - 2011-03-30 20:33

Katlego, be an example for the millions of youngsters that adore you, be responsible, take a lift home if you are pissed or something, come on man!!!
