According to Soccer Laduma, following the Bafana Bafana squad announcement Da Gama unveiled the reasons to why he did not assemble a squad just yet.

“As most of you can understand our U23 team has been very inactive and so at this moment we are unable to name an U23 team,” said Da Gama.

“We do have a plan in place which the SAFA technical committee is currently implementing.

“Once the plan is set in motion there will be an overlap between the U20 and U23 national teams in an effort to ensure that younger players are finding their way to Bafana.

“We will have a team which will start preparing for next year’s Olympics as we are still waiting for FIFA to confirm the dates,” he added.
