The 33-year-old is clubless at the moment after having his contract with West Ham terminated by mutual consent.
His agent Rob Moore has revealed he has been disappointed with the way coach Pitso Mosimane has ignored the man who has been so pivotal for the national team in the past.
He feels his client can still help bolster Bafana, even if it is as a striker coach.
"One thing that's disappointed me, and I've tried a number of times to get hold of Pitso, is that here you have the greatest-ever goal-scorer for South Africa," Moore told The Times.
"For years, South Africa have had problems with goal-scoring. The players respect him and look up to him - it would be brilliant if he could come in and help Pitso work on a specialist level with the strikers.
"But he (Pitso) doesn't answer the phone, so that's a bit disappointing. Benni is a guy who would like to be involved. He would willingly put something back into the game.
"His days of playing international football are finished, but in terms of what he has to offer as an individual - it's a hell of a lot, being able to put something back in and work with the young strikers of today."
Meanwhile, Moore shed some light on McCarthy's partying of ways with the Hammers.
"He doesn't want to sit out his contract for the sake of money," he explained.
"He's continuing his rehabilitation, he's still recovering from a dead leg sustained in a reserve team game against Chelsea a few weeks ago. He scored and then had to go off.
"This injury is taking a bit longer to heal than expected, and that hampered the possibility of him going on loan. He'll continue to train at West Ham until he gets back to full fitness.
"There's no point looking at anything now, most of the transfer windows are closed anyway," he concluded.
