Cape Town - Former Bafana Bafana head coach Clive Barker says that Shakes Mashaba is the right man to lead the national team forward.
Sport24 wants the fans to choose their Bafana XI
The South African Football Association recently outlined their 'Vision 2022' which aims to see Bafana growing steadily towards the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
With a more long-term approach to South Africa having been adopted, Barker believes that Mashaba is the perfect person to groom the stars of the future - if he maintains some consistency.
“You know whether you like it or not, he’s produced Benni McCarthy at his best, Quinton Fortune, got the result against Brazil (at the 2000 Sydney Olympics), and now he’s qualified with the Under-20s for the Youth Championships," Barker told Football411.
“And generally, I think he’s got the ability to make average players good players and that’s the hallmark of a good coach.
”I think Shakes has got to be advised and guided that he picks the same side consistently and lets it mature a little bit and if he does that he will be successful.
“If he doesn’t, he’ll be walking away from what has made him good, and he is inviting trouble.”
Barker knows a thing or two about success with the national team, having guided SA to the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations title.
