Bafana v Egypt in Gauteng

2011-03-08 16:04
Johannesburg - The eagerly awaited March 26 Africa Cup of Nations 2012 qualifier between Bafana Bafana and Egypt will be played in Gauteng, reports the Sowetan

"We are busy finalising the contract for the match but I can tell you that it will be played here in Gauteng," said acting SAFA chief executive Pinky Lehoko.

This ends speculation that the match was heading for either Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane or Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg.

Sowetan has learnt that representatives from the Polokwane municipality approached SAFA last week with a view to hosting the match. They will also host the 2011 African Champions League match between Egyptian giants Al-Ahly and SuperSport United on April 2.

SAFA decided to look for an alternative venue after many people expressed concerns about the condition of the pitch at Soccer City, the original venue for the fixture.

Stadium Management South Africa, which is managing the stadium, has assured SAFA that the pitch will be in good condition for the Bafana match.
