Bafana in match-fixing probe

2011-06-27 09:57

Johannesburg - A FIFA investigation into match-fixing is to include Soccer World Cup warm-up matches played by Bafana Bafana, reports Timeslive.

The Sunday Sun reported that investigators would focus on two games SA played before hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup - their 5-0 victory over Guatemala on May 31 and their 2-1 victory over Colombia on May 27.

FIFA are looking into the activities of Niger referee Ibrahim Chaibou, who recently handled the match where Nigeria trounced Argentina 4-1.

Chaibou also refereed the game against Guatemala, a record victory margin for Bafana.

The report said FIFA also wanted to learn how Chaibou came to referee a match in South Africa and who had arranged for him to be invited.

Fifa looking into it? Really. Wow, thought it would have been their idea to get the locals behind bafan before the world cup

haha, now it makes sense. they win 5-0 and beat a very good columbia and after that everyone expected them to do wonders at the world cup and then they go embarrass us becoming the 1st host in history to not make the 2nd round. off the point . . . but bafana must be forced to be more representative like all other codes-no double standards please.

Come now chief! it is an investigation. No one is guilty yet? what kind of moron are you?

      Sparxi - 2011-06-27 17:31

@Balrog, Jose & Xidadjane: The headline is misleading, guys. It's not Bafana that is being investigated, but a referee. This referee also happened to be in charge of the two matches played by Bafana an referred to in the article. A poor headline...

  • Rover_ZA - 2011-06-27 11:27

Not that I condone match-fixing in any way, it does, however, seem ironic that FIFA with all their very recent vote-fixing are investigating cheats when they're run by cheats.

Philip did the match fixing, he was in SA remember! Feel it the problem is here now…

  • G-spotWizard - 2011-06-27 12:06

this headline is sensantionalist, are they investigating the ref or the banana bafana? it sound to me that they are investigating the ref.

  • Nthlarhi - 2011-06-27 12:09

This is nosense, anyone can beat Guatemala. Bafana beat Thailand by 4 nill, did we fix this match as well? Did we fix both matches we played against Africa's number one Egypt?
