Bafana hold on to beat Ghana

2010-08-11 22:53

Johannesburg - Katlego Mphela scored in the 42nd minute to hand South Africa a 1-0 victory over World Cup quarter-finalists Ghana at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

The first good chance of the game went to Bafana on 14 minutes when Katlego Mphela played through but Ghana keeper Richard Kingson did well with the ball hitting him in the face before going out for a corner.

The goal finally came four minutes before the break. Steven Pienaar played through a fine through-ball and Mphela complied as he connected well to put the hosts in the lead.

It was a well deserved goal as Bafana had been dominating the game up to that point.

Ghana battled the replicate the form that nearly saw them make the semi-finals of the World Cup last month only to be denied by Uruguay in controversial circumstances.

The supporters turned up in great numbers despite the cold Johannesburg weather on the night and remained jovial throughout the game with the constant sound of the vuvuzela buzzing throughout the match.

Well done, Bafana Bafana !!! You show-cased the national sport with pride. Next Saturday the ABs will show-case their national sport by bringing another victory to Soccer City.

  • Chris - 2010-08-12 06:28

Best performance by Pienaar in a long time. With the Pirates / Chiefs final last Saturday, and the performance last night, footie in SA is getting back to a high, attractive standard. Loved watching both games.

  • Woodpecker - 2010-08-12 06:31

What a gud result. This should happen more often especially if the coach can "always be allowed" to sideline TEKO.

  • Mzeke - 2010-08-12 06:33

Positive results will always be good for the country. Keep it up

  • Lion - 2010-08-12 06:35

    Mooi MANNE!!!!!!!! Lead SA!

  • Nikita-Phalaborwa - 2010-08-12 07:03

Feel it, it is here to stay. Well done Bafana, we are proud of you!

  • Koos - 2010-08-12 07:16

Good match for Bafana Bafana. Critical analysis- SA good depth in critical defence, midlfield good play but shbstitutes upfront did not provide good back up to starting forwards. Ghana will still need to use Paintsil and Hans Adu Sarpei at right and leftback, Inkoom dod well not Afful. Central defence Isaac Vorsah and John Mensah presence felt. Midfield good in second half. Strikers all disppointed this means Amoah, Prince Tagoe , Muntari still needed. Good morale booster for SA but statistics shows that Ghana's coach record at frienmdlies is not good. Swazi coach should be worried because he will not know which Ghana squad will be used for the Afcon qualifier. For SA , most of players will be in action against Niger.

  • Tshepo Leopeng - 2010-08-12 07:18

    One game at a time.

  • LETONA - 2010-08-12 07:21

Oh!What a game......Our boys were fully prepared for the Ghananians, they predicted correctly.Bafana Bafana were marvelous 2 watch, they were all over their opponents.Pienaar,Sibaya and Shabba controlled the middlefield superbly, they supplied our strikers fully and there was no win 4 Ghana.Morgan,Pienaar,Shabba and Mphela were stars of the night.Bafana Bafana nearly reminded me of our 1996 squad.SAFA must c 2 it that we get one to two strong challenges every month. Will soon be recrowned THE KINGS OF AFRICA.Congratulations to Pitso and Bafana Bafana,we are proud of you guys.

  • D - 2010-08-12 07:26

  • Molefe - 2010-08-12 08:12

Good first half, but after the changes I was very dissapointed in the 2nd half. Great to see Bernard Parker linking so well with Mphela!

  • RauRau - 2010-08-12 08:19

Good performance by Bafana Bafana and i think Pitso's tactics really usual SABC wrongly choose man of the match, i think Steven Pienaar or Morgan Gould deserved it. i'm glad Aaron Mokoena is slowly moving out of Bafana squad and Modise was not missed....yippeeeeeeeee

  • Elliot - 2010-08-12 08:31

  • Michael Chinnu - 2010-08-12 09:30

Now for BMT - our boys need some psycological help. They have the ability - lets prepare for a good mind-set during big games that count (BMT = Big Match Temperament)

  • Hoi Mash - 2010-08-12 09:54

Notice that whenever Teko is not there, we play well. I enjoyed the quality of football displayed yesterday and even in the Telkom Charity Cup. Looking foward to a Thrilling ABSA PSL Season

  • mlungisi - 2010-08-12 10:12

as long as the overated ' TEKO ' is not in the starting line up, we'll do well.

  • Fabregas Thabethe - 2010-08-12 10:26

I'd give Bafana a rating of 7/10 for the performance in this game. A win is always a great result, whether dirty or beautiful. There were a lot of positives in the match. Khuboni showed class in his marshalling of the area just in front of the back-four, his passes are crisp, he never misses a pass, and that's a great rate. Siyabonga Sangweni brought some needed calm at the back when replacing the less-than-convincing Mokoena. Peinaar was excellent and played with command. Mphela is impressive in the national team jersey and that's a good sign. I was concerned with our flank-play though, especially the right...we don't create as good on the left with Shabba and Masilela and that does not help when we could vary our game. Klate was out-of-sorts when he came in...but overall positive and great game

welldone bafana bafana and our promising coach pitso mosimane ......
