Bafana stutter to draw

2012-06-03 17:09

Rustenburg - Bafana Bafana - and embattled coach Pitso Mosimane - escaped with a 1-1 draw against Ethiopia in their opening 2014 World Cup qualifier in Phokeng, outside Rustenburg, on Sunday.

The Ethiopians nearly compounded more misery on the struggling hosts, who are now winless in seven matches, and were 13 minutes away from a stunning result in a match marred by poor local attendance.

The visitors took a half-time lead courtesy of Saladin Said, who powered a shot into the roof of the net in the 28th minute.

The troublesome player dispossessed the poor Tsepo Masilela before rattling the shock goal to the delight of their impressive fan base at the Phokeng venue.

Against the run of play, and having been outclassed, the disjointed Bafana outfit equalised late in the second half through Katlego Mphela in the 77th minute.

South Africa's next fixture is another tricky encounter away to Botswana in Gaborone on Saturday.

Ahead of next year's Africa Cup of Nations, which South Africa will host, there will be a big focus on Mosimane's job, and whether he is fit to lead the side.

Bafana failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations last year, while their last victory came against Burkina Faso in a friendly in August.

Bafana were expected to win comfortably against the 138th-ranked east African nation, having planned meticulously in camp for over two weeks.

They started off well and set their intentions early as Anele Ngcongca, Siyabonga Nomvethe and Mphela were denied by Sisay Bancha Basa in the Ethiopian goal.

The Black Lions, however, were comfortable and tenacious as they withstood the early attacks.

They probed the static Bafana defence with their quick offensive play and balls over the top, spearheaded by the nippy Said.

He twice drew saves from Bafana 'keeper Itumeleng Khune before nailing the game's opener with an unstoppable shot.

Masilela, who was carrying an injury, was soon replaced by Punch Masenamela at left back, having shouldered the blame for the goal.

The east African visitors, who have not won away since beating lowly Madagascar two years ago, were at their best on the afternoon.

They earned a credible point against their more established opponents - at least on paper.

Bafana made another substitute at the interval, with Oupa Manyisa replacing Reneilwe Letsholonyane, as the team looked to enthuse creativity in midfield.

The promising Mphela and Nomvethe partnership, though, seemed to fizzle before the former ignited the home team with an opportunistic strike.

Mphela was afforded a free kick on the edge of the box in the dying moments of the game, in search of the winner, but his shot came off the Ethiopian defensive wall.

Masenamela fashioned a shot in injury time that sailed wide of goal to seal his side's fate as they settled for a single point.

I think Pitso must go,finish and klaar.

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-06-03 18:06

Not his fault that he has no talent to work with. We are simply not a big soccer nation anymore. When last did a big foreign team want to sign local players? Exactly!

      Helmut - 2012-06-03 18:07

Pitso is the pits he must go

      colin.dovey - 2012-06-03 18:20

Gordon Igesund is the right choice, based on HIS form as a coach, succeeding against the odds. What they need to establish is a "Bafana Academy" with players staying on fulltime, and recruiting form the schools/

      kibalem - 2012-06-03 21:37

Bravo my Ethiopian players. You are our heroes. Hopefully, we will see you in the 2014 world cup. You have to overwhelmingly exert all of your maximum efforts to achieve a very successful result. Your today's score is very remarkable. I am proud of you. Please keep it up!!

  • craiqpayne - 2012-06-03 17:15

I don't see why these "smaller" africans nations feel the need just to grab a point in South Africa's back yard. The secret been out for ages. Any team that can slap on a jersey can beat us. If Ethiopia played there usual game they probably would have beaten us. Unable to even win our home games, how are we going to survive away. I'm optimistic by nature by expecting the team not to quality again.

      Tefrayard - 2012-06-03 17:22

  • nomathemba.mlotshwa - 2012-06-03 17:24

Pitso should just quit. This is embarrassing. If we draw at home with the likes of Ethiopia, then I don't see how we gonna qualify for SWC 2014. Pitso please do the country a favor and leave. We have been building the team for a long time and it looks like we will be building forever. I bet his comment after the game was we did well.

I've written dis open letter 2 u bcoz I'm like every other fan out there, I'm concerned about de direction in wich u r leading bafana bafana. I'd like 2 start with ur squad selection 4 the must win qualifiers against Ethiopia and Botswana. Pitso where is Benni? I think pitso is very jealous about Benni.we need such experience. How can u leave him out? U choose yeye wat Mathebula did 2 deserve dis? Masilela is not mach fit why u leave matlaba? U select khumalo and Serero can u tell me when did they last play a game? What is the thinking behind ur squad selection? No one ever seems 2 know, perhaps u could explain dis 2 us one day. Pitso, dis is football,a game of opinions, and while we might sound critical of u. Listern, its just that we all want the same thing as u. Succes!its just dat.I wish we loose against Botswana.

  • Malavi10 - 2012-06-03 17:51

Maybe Pitso is using muti against SAFA because SAFA believes in muti too much. How do u explain 7 games without a win and still be a \coach\ in international level?

  • attie.snyders - 2012-06-03 17:53

Pitso do the honourable thing and resign together with you whole technical team. This is a disgrace how a country like ours is becoming the laughing stock in Africa. Ag nee!

  • Zenzile Tshanda - 2012-06-03 17:53

if you don't take your chances, then you will not win any games. why blame pitso?

      emmanuel.manu.18 - 2012-06-03 19:35

Coz he is da head coach....................................

  • Ziggamann - 2012-06-03 17:56

Drop this tief pissoffo. Get new coach and technical team. Some of our strikers can only finish if ball at their feet they are not creative like messi, rooney, tevez, ballotelli or benni.Get a better technical team to improve selections. this was very lame --epic fail

  • Godfrey Adams - 2012-06-03 17:57

How long must our country suffer under Pitso? There is clearly no plan B.I think Pitso and Mduli is using the same muti

  • sadrick.lottering - 2012-06-03 17:58

And for every disapointment Gordon Igesund and Gavin Hunt's genius wil continue beaming... It's time blackman... the lip service has eroded support for the Bafana and you riding on Nomvete's shine to draw crowds failed dismally. Pitso, you are done baba. Today we know that much were manipulated in the PSL, to have you seem able.

It can't be vey hard to get the ball past an Ethiopian goalie..

      Provence - 2012-06-03 18:42

That makes Bafana look even worse, when you can't get a ball past an Ethiopian goalkeeper. I am sure the blind soccer team would of beaten Ethiopia.

@provence, no the blind soccer team would have beaten Banana Banana!

Dear FIFA, our national team are an embarrasment, you see our football league (PSL) is ranked 15 in the world in terms of comercial revenue, miles ahead of any african league. Yet our league is ranked 6th in africa, our national team 15th in africa. So FIFA do u hv any QOUTA systems for these morons coz they cant qualify for major tournaments on their own.

It's so sad that our soccer is so dead in such a way that even a team from third division can beat Bafana bafana hands down. I think it's high time where we need to re-introduce the white players to our soccer because even though they are not good soccer players but they do as instructed and most importantly they understand what patriotism is our black players don't even know what's that, look at rugby, rugby players are prepared to die in the field for their country South Africa, our rugby is rated amongst the best in the world because of the dedication of these quality players

@ Ako.gutswa Europe is the so-called \white continent\ and if you care to checkout the Fifa rank list you will notice that Europe dominates and Africa the so-called \black continent\ countries are not doing that well. My point is, don't write \I think is high time where we need to re-introduce white players to our soccer because even tho they are not good soccer players but they do as in-structed\. What I'm actually saying is that, there are brilliant white and other group players and from the look of it, the team is just a bunch of losers.
