Ajax CT snub Bafana

2011-05-09 14:25

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane will rely on local-based players for the international friendly against Tanzania.

Bafana travel to Tanzania for their date with the East Africans on May 14 and Mosimane's aim is to prepare his team for their 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt away from home.

PSL log leaders Ajax Cape Town have no players in the team after the Cape side refused to released Thulani Serero, Thulani Hlatshwayo and George Maluleka - three of the players Mosimane had intended to call up.

"I wanted Maluleka, Serero and Hlatshwayo, but Ajax felt they didn't want to release their players. Because of the Nedbank Cup semis, we left out players from Orlando Pirates and Mpumalanga Black Aces as well, but the rest of the teams gave us their players," he said.

Bafana squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Wayne Sandilands (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Defenders: Morgan Gould (SuperSport United), Siyanda Xulu (Mamelodi Sundowns), Eric Mathoho, Prince Hlela (both Bloemfontein Celtic), Mzivukile Tom, Siyanda Zwane, Siyabonga Sangweni, (all Golden Arrows), Tefu Mashamaite (Bidvest Wits)

Midfielders: Hlompho Kekana (Bloemfontein Celtic), Thanduyise Khuboni (Golden Arrows), Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala (both Kaizer Chiefs), Thandani Ntshumayelo (SuperSport United), Thabo Matlaba (Free State Stars), Erwin Isaacs (Santos), Sifiso Myeni (Bidvest Wits)

Strikers: Bernard Parker (Panserriakos), Vuyisile Wana (Santos), Lehlohonolo Majoro (Amazulu), Katlego Mphela (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Here we go again. the circus is back in town. No fault of yours Pitso.

      Observer - 2011-05-09 15:20

One wonders why there is a friendly still being played with the league unfinished?

      njabulo.nxele - 2011-05-09 15:44

Check your facts armchair, the match doesnt fall under the FIFA designated match days

  • lenand40 - 2011-05-09 15:03

Rob Moore is at it again. Wonder what he will say when Serero is left out of the team, or loses a chance to play in Europe because he has not represented his country. Idiots!!!!

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 15:13

How in the world is Rob Moore associated with this decision?

  • tibos2 - 2011-05-09 15:05

they are ridiculous Ajax is not on Nedbank semifinals they were nocked off way back from the cup final they think they are too special, watch out when they loose the league championship idiots.

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 15:24

You are a royal idiot. No-one has to release their players. Ajax chose not to, so that makes them ridiculous? Huge game coming up, injury ravished squad, so why would they release their players?!

      tibos2 - 2011-05-09 15:47

dont act clever on me right, the statment says becuase of the Nedbank cup no pls final match even if they keep their top players for the final match it does guarrantee them an outmatic win because they keep thier so called top players

      DeonL - 2011-05-09 16:23

He was talking about 2 other clubs that also previously refused to release players. It is a friendly too.

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 16:51

They do not need to win, they need to draw - if they stand any chance of picking up one point against Maritzburg (very likely) then they will need their best team. End of story.

      Sleg Bliksem - 2011-05-09 18:21

      but they are special.....

      Sleg Bliksem - 2011-05-09 18:22

why is he not calling up doctor khumalo and andre arendse? huh?

  • TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 15:12

Dont be retarded guys, Ajax were perfectly in their right to keep their players. Sir Alex Ferguson would have done the same if Capello called up Rooney, Carrick and Rio a week before United's biggest clash. Ajax are one point away from the PSL title - with Fanteni suspended they cannot go and have Serero play for Bafana and get injured.... they're already one down with Scott being out; so why risk any more players?! If you watched their abysmal game against Chiefs you'd understand why they need all the players they can get.

  • ghost - 2011-05-09 15:17

A Little Bit Biased, risk Ajax losing the league title, yet Pirates players can focus on the Cup

  • Observer - 2011-05-09 15:19

Ajax face a huge match on the final day of the season for the league - why would they want their top players to risk injury ahead of such a crunch game? Yes, it does in a way show that club is more important than country, but this is the league we're talking about, while Bafana are only playing a friendly.

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 15:22

It's a friendly for crying out loud! You don't see European teams having a friendly before their league's big climax! Well said.

      Bull - 2011-05-09 15:41

The league is neck and neck but you expect the teams to release their players to travel to Tanzania 5 days before they play a game of their lives!!??? Come on! Be fair to the teams! Its a flipping friendly! why is it not played after the 21st? If a team lose a player to injury during this friendly, where does that put their chances of winning tehe league or surviving relegation? I support Ajax, the timing of this friendly is bad!

  • Muzzy21 - 2011-05-09 15:25

They must not cry wolf when their players are not concidered for the squad next time around. You cant play or not play fo the squad when its suits you or your team.

      tibos2 - 2011-05-09 15:35

      good point

  • spiderkzn - 2011-05-09 15:33

    Where Steven Pienaar?

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 16:12

      overseas club buddy. read up?

  • BoneCollectR - 2011-05-09 16:44

I am a Pirates fan but screw this. Ajax are not to be expected to release their player ahead of a major match, one they have worked towards for the whole season. Bulldust.

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 16:51

Couldn't have said it better myself. Well played.

      mpho30 - 2011-05-09 17:45

I am also a Pirates fan and know that had we not be playing this weekend our players would also be released. Chiefs is also chasing the title and they let their MAJOR players go. Ajax is being rediculous, if I was Pitso, this would be the last time I even call players from Ajax CT Is this not the same reason we were all mad at Benni? Putting club before country? Serero is leaving the club at the end of the season, If I were Pitso, I would never bother the 'mighty' Ajax again...who have yet to win a championship!

      Dok - 2011-05-09 18:37

Agree @BoneCollectR. It is the right of each club to refuse to release their players for an unscheduled FIFA friendly as they please. @mpho30, thank the heavens you are not Pitso 'cause you do not think like a professional coach but like a fan who never made it as a coach. We all want to be professional coaches but the moment we get the chance to be professional we act and say like we do not know what is going on in the world of football! It is true supporters like @BoneCollectR who knows what soccer is all about! O yes, I AM AN AJAX FAN!

  • don fillipe - 2011-05-09 16:56

National team first, clubs come second. PSL does not qualify us for cups - we need to beat the Pharaohs. Logic a-b-c

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 17:09

Not when it is a meaningless friendly!

      don fillipe - 2011-05-09 17:58

There is no such thing as a 'meaningless friendly'.

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 18:08

don't show your ignorance.... it is a meaningless friendly when it comes to putting your players out there who may break a leg or two.

  • Mikey777 - 2011-05-09 19:41

Please don't blame Ajax, blame the idiots who scheduled the friendly match before the climax of the Psl Championship.Look around the world, England, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Argentina and nowhere do you find any footbal association schedule a match before the last match of the season. How can you morons accuse Ajax of not releasing their players when they have everything to play for, unless off course you are a "Chiefs" or "Pirates" supporter.

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-09 21:19

      love it.

  • zoli - 2011-05-10 06:04

Spotman go and checkk the long they need to win that game bcs pirates have better goal difference than ajax stop ebarrasing u self or ur the same cpt think they no english soccer.

      TheSportsMan - 2011-05-10 10:20

Zoli: If Orlando Pirates lose/draw, Ajax need a draw. Don't patronise me. And this is PSL soccer, not English football; so I am not sure what you are talking about. When you learn some grammar and pass a spelling bee, give me a shout. Got it?

  • Bhuti - 2011-05-10 12:06

Some people dont understand football. its NOT a FIFA date, hence clubs DONT have to release thier players. Questions should be asked of why Mattie Patterson isnt in the squad, why Bradley Gobler isnt in this team and Punch Masenamela isnt in the team. Grobler has 1 goal less than Mphela and Majoro.

  • Tyrone Mawela - 2011-05-10 14:52

talk about greed, what ever happened to national responsibility

  • Ismail - 2011-05-10 17:00

Players loose the chance to get an international cap under belt.Sorry for them....Because,come Egypty game they will not even be on reserve squad.May be Serero will be warming Bafana bench.

  • Rowan - 2011-05-15 10:40

How dare Pitso expect this from us at this critical stage for a international friendly. Come'on now get real Pitso!!!!!
