Cape Town - Veteran goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has urged his team-mates to be more committed to the cause of the country and the team.
Speaking to
KickOff.com on Wednesday during the Mamelodi Sundowns Media open day, he said that it is not always good to just blame the coach without looking at the players’ performance.
“A player should be aggressive when in the field of play. Whether it is for club or country, you should show that you want to die on the field of play for a win. It is not always good to blame the coach when the team does not do well. We also have to question the commitment of the players,” he said.
Baloyi’s statement comes at a time when many people are calling for the head of head coach Joel Santana from Bafana after eight losses in nine games.
“There is no one who plays to lose. We all go into the field wanting to win and that includes the coach. A win or a loss in football is as a result of all the parties involved, the players and the coach, but when you lose fingers always point at the coach why?
“We have to look at what the problem is and solve it rather than just blaming one party,” he tells
KickOff.com.
Meanwhile, Baloyi also expressed concern about the shape of his three team-mates, strikers Katlego Mphela, Mabhuti Khenyeza and defender Siboniso Gaxa when they return home from Bafana's disappointing two match friendly trip to Norway and Iceland.
The Bafana squad arrives home on Thursday. Mphela in particular has been in tremendous form scoring nine goals for his club so far this season.
“I know that when I returned back from Bafana duty last month when we played Germany and Ireland my body was tired. I hope all three players are looked after as all three are key players,” says Baloyi.
“There is not much time to recover from when they come back on Thursday to match day on Saturday.”
But head coach Hristo Stoitchkov was not too concerned.
“It is normal all over the world that players return from an internationals a few days before a League match. I am not worried I am sure they will be fighting fit when they return. But I have a squad of 35 players from which to select 11,” said the former Barcelona and Bulgarian star.
