Johannesburg - South Africa football national team Bafana Bafana have been rewarded for their impressive run in the recent 2009 Confederations Cup which was won by Brazil.

For their efforts Bafana move two places up from 72 to 70, an acceptable achievement for a team that has been going down the rankings in an alarming rate recently.

The biggest change is at the top which sees Brazil managing to topple Spain for the top spot after the Spaniards had remain the number one ranked team for a year. Brazil won five consecutive matches on their way to the Confederations Cup triumph. Spain came third in the tournament after a shock defeat by the USA in the semi-finals.

Bafana showed much improvement against the likes of eventual champions Brazil going down by a slender 1-0, while everyone had expected the Brazilians to hammer them by a bigger margin. They also held their own against European champions Spain in the 3rd and 4th playoff forcing the game to extra time, this after leading 1-0 with three minutes remaining, but Spain made a quick reply scoring two goals in two minutes. But Bafana were not to be outdone as they got a late equaliser in the referee’s optional time to send the game to extra time, where they later conceded and lost the game 3-2.

This will be something the technical team will be delighted about as the national team really needs to be in a respectable position in the rankings as hosts of the Fifa 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Meanwhile, Confederations Cup finalists the USA also moved two places up to 12th and Egypt moved two up as well occupying the 38th spot. Poor performances from both Iraq and New Zealand saw them going down 17 and 18 places down respectively. Iraq are now ranked 94 and New Zealand are 100th. Italy are unchanged at number 4.

i must admit that the SA soccer team are in fact useless to sat the least due to the fact that they get paid large amounts of money just to go and lose what the hell is wrong with them and i think that not having Benni in the squad is just ridiculous because he might just be able to help the team by providing an atmosphere of winning, but maybe having Benni on the team might just dampen the teams spirits i dont know but damn atleast Byrce is carrying our surname high in the other part of the world!!!!!!!!!!

If only guys like Shaun and Lucas can realise that they are hurting rising young strikers like Katltego Mphela and Katlego Mashego etc. Bennie does not have his LOVE for his country. He likes the World Cup stage because it is an advertising opportunity. Besides he does not have the umph he had during his heydays at Bafana. Please Shaun and Lucas give young stars your support and stop critisising them in disguise. You were look after, during your playing so why can't you do the same?. Please help groom and promote young stars.

bafana played well, but it will not last. Our development is pathetic, there is no continueity in our structures. Look at Lungisani Ndlela and Peter Crouch from england. Crouch was developed and given a chance to represet his country but our TALL Lungisani was overlooked.\ Referring needs to improve drastically, i believe it plays a role in standard improvement.

We seem to be a country that is easly pleased. We celebrate even the smallest of insignificant victories. What are we using as reference to measure our progress? Interms of our previous perfomances, our last perfomance was OK but interms of international football it means nothing. From 5 games: 1 win, 1 draw 3 loses in your backyard with soldout seats for all games. I am not taking anything away from our boys< WELL DONE BAFANA>. SANTANA where is our seasoned striker?

It is soon to celebrate. In football it is the results that count, not the way you play. The truth of the matter is that out of 4 matches, we managed to win only 1 match against NZ ranked 94 (expected to win and we won), loose 2 games (expected to loose and we lost) and draw 1 match against Iraq ranked 100 (expected to win but we drew); so it is 37.5%. Besides we were playing at home, we should have done better because we had the whole nation behind us but the other teams were under a lot of pressure. I don't think that I have woneven one match or played the way we did if we were palying outside the country. Let us not foul ourselves, a lot needs to be done if we want to avoid embarassment in 2010. However let me congratulate Bafana for "playing wel" and "not winning"

We come from the past that we are all not proud of and I happen to share the positive sentiment that at least BB has got direction than they were 9 months ago. I will encourage BB with a positive tick for the improvement.

I just want to say well done to Bafana Bafana! For the first time in my life I watched our national soccer team play and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I even jumped up and down like a proper soccer hooligan and got excited over the way they play. Can't wait for the World Cup....make us proud Boys!

I am suprised that we only moved up 2 places considering how we pushed Spain and Brazil. But in hindsight, what cost us was the 0-0 draw with a poor Iraq side. A win would have moved us up further.

Any improvement in Fifa standings for any team is most welcome given the tough nature of scoring points and moving even one step up on the ladder so Congratulations are in order for Bafana Bafana and mostly Joel Santalino Santana who beyond all criticism has kept his eyes on the ball and put together what South African patriots can call a Winning National team . We played against the best in the world and gave them a mrun for their money and even as we speak , mention the word Bafana to Torres and he will have a night mare for sure . Positive Bafana keep it Up !!!!

The reality is we ony beat New Zealand and drew with Iraq in this Confed Cup therefore we must not be mislead into thinking our football is right again. However having said that our performances against Brazil and Spain shows us there is great potential but still alot of work to be done. We need a striker ASAP...!!!
Anonymous User7/1/2009 1:07 PM
With a decent stiker up front maybe we could pull off what Senegal did in the 2002 Word Cup. The team looks more competant under Santana and it shows in the rankings.
Anonymous User7/1/2009 1:06 PM
We are proud of you BOYS!!! Keep up the good work! The three of us!
Anonymous User7/1/2009 12:54 PM
Toga and Uganda moved down. I have great hope for Bafana if they carry on playing the way they did in the confed cup. Keep going boys.
Tyrone7/1/2009 12:45 PM
Well done. There's been a change in attitude from the team, and it won't be long before we climb that ranking ladder even further. Keep it up and make us proud!
BAPS7/1/2009 12:43 PM
Guys stop being pathetic and inform yourselfs as to how the rankings are determined. I know the vague details myself. Factors for ranking are nature of match(friendly counts less than say Confed Cup), opposition (beating a high ranked site will move you up) etc. Bafana has actually NOT lost most of their past 10 games but they were friendlies. If they had beat either Brazil or Spain i think they would have been 65. Next year when the AFCON plays, Bafana should move down or maybe go up a little because they would be playing only friendlies.
Mr Joel Sambabana7/1/2009 12:40 PM
Hey lay out R20 mill for a caoch to take you to 70 in the world when in 1996 we were better than that....but what it does say is that in this confed cup whilst we were competitive we all knew that we are not in the same league as Brazil or Spain even though we looked good...but all we did is actually beat New Zealand..why didn't we beat Iraq...who only have a handful of players to choose from....things need to be put in prespective where we have gone over the last 13 years...
patch7/1/2009 12:37 PM
So that makes 7 places. since May09... Visit fifa.com
Captain7/1/2009 12:18 PM
Well done !!!!
Anonymous User7/1/2009 12:00 PM
Just thinking who are the 2 teams that moved down when Bafana bafana moved 2 steps up? Might that maybe be squads that were not participating during the Conf Cup? Or the possibility is that those 2 teams are not allowed to participate in international soccer? Or their country is ravaged by war, so they have been out of form for some time, somewhere in Africa maybe.
Roger Brewis7/1/2009 12:00 PM
Well done to the coach - Joe Santana!!!! He should be given far more recognition for his success!!!!
Anonymous User7/1/2009 11:59 AM
Interesting rankings, you get promoted if you lose. Smells like politics to me.
Frank_Lampard87/1/2009 11:48 AM
