Cape Town - Dutch premier league giants Ajax Amsterdam have abandoned their plans to tour South Africa in January due to their domestic league commitments.
Ajax Amsterdam were due to participate in a four team tournament from January 13-17 in Cape Town. The event would feature defending Absa Premiership champions SuperSport United, Telkom Knockout holders Ajax Cape Town and Santos.
However, Ajax Amsterdam were informed that they will play NAC on January 17, hence their decision to pull the plug on the SA trip.
Heavy snowfalls have seen a number of sports events postponed across Europe and Ajax Amsterdam were victims of the bad weather.
Ajax Amsterdam would have been based in Stellenbosch as part of the partnership between Ajax Cape Town and the Cape Winelands District to show their readiness to host major teams during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
"It is very unfortunate that Ajax Amsterdam had to cancel their tour to South Africa as games against the PSL log leaders SuperSport United and Ajax Cape Town would have drawn the crowds and the South African teams would have been able to test their football ability against one of the giants of European football," Shooz Mekuto, the Ajax Cape Town PRO told the club's official website.
"We would also have had the opportunity to show the world that Cape Town is a perfect host city ahead of the World Cup."
