Johannesburg - Phetolo Sekome’s goal in second half stoppage time secured a 1-1 draw for Mpumalanga Black Aces against Santos in a Premier Soccer League promotional play-off tie at the Themba Senamela Stadium in Middleburg on Saturday afternoon.
Black Aces went into the tie having already booked their spot in next season’s PSL thanks to a goalless draw against Chippa United in midweek.
The game was Amazoyoni coach Jacob Sakala’s final game in charge of the Mpumalanga side after it was announced that he wouldn’t be leading Aces into South Africa’s top flight next season.
Santos created the first opportunity of the match through Brian Onyango in the eighth minute of the match. The defender lost his marker in the area before directing a powerful header at goal, his effort though was cleared off the line.
Onyango’s effort proved to be the best chance of the first half, Aces dominated to an extent but the home side failed to really test Lee Langeveldt between the sticks. The first half ended goalless.
Vuyisile Wana had a great opportunity to give his side the lead just after the break. Aces’s failed clearance attempt fell to an unmarked Wana inside the area, the midfielder though could only manage to direct his shot wide of goal.
The People’s team took the lead through Tebogo Masaole in the 79th minute of the game. Wana played an inch perfect ball into the path of Masaole who made no mistake from close range.
Just as it seemed as if Santos have spoiled Amazayoni’s party, second half substitute Phetolo Sekome found the back of the net via a Langeveldt blunder to ignite mass celebration in Middleburg.
