Shakes not giving up hope

Mongomo - South Africa coach Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba is not giving hope on his side's chances of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw with Senegal on Friday.

"It was unfortunate we did not win today. We had more chances and we should have won. The boys have played very well in our two games but we will be judged on our results," said Mashaba after the Group C game in Mongomo.

Oupa Manyisa gave Bafana Bafana the lead at the start of the second half, only for Kara Mbodji to earn Senegal a draw.

South Africa must now beat Ghana in their last match in Mongomo next Tuesday to stand any chance of progressing to the last eight.

"We are still in contention. We can still surprise a lot of people. We should have scored at least six goals in our two matches," added Mashaba.

"The teams we have played have not caused us so many problems, but they have managed to score. The goal they scored came because of the height advantage they have."

Captain Dean Furman said: "We take a lot of confidence from the way we have played in these two matches, even if we have not got the results we hoped for.

"We just have to hope that a win in our last game will be enough for us to go through."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
