Johannesburg - The SABC would broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations starting from Sunday, the state broadcaster said on Saturday.

"It has been agreed that the Africa Cup of Nations would be broadcast on SABC1 from Sunday night with the first match between Angola and Mali at 21:00," said spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago.

The SABC had sent a team of negotiators to France in a bid to find permission from SportFive - the rights agent for the Confederation of African Football - to broadcast the tournament.

This follows SportFive forcing the SABC to pay over R1bn in terms of a series of agreements allegedly entered into between the parties in 2008.

The broadcaster said the agreements were invalid because it was not authorised in terms of the South African statutes governing the SABC.

The SABC said its interim board tried to initiate discussions with SportFive to negotiate the terms of the agreements as it held the view that honouring such a contract would be illegal. Kganyago said it learnt of the news on Friday night.
