Ghana consolidate lead

Kumasi - The Black Stars of Ghana defeated Congo 3-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium in on Friday night to consolidate their leadership of Group I of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series.

They now have 10 points from four matches, while second-placed Sudan, on seven points, are away to Swaziland this weekend.

Ghana defeated Congo 3-0 in Brazzaville in March and made it a double Friday night, but it was only in the second half that the home team finally got on the score sheet.

Hoffenheim defender Isaac Vorsah struck on the hour when he heads home from a corner.

And six minutes later, Partisan Belgrade striker Prince Tagoe doubled Ghana advantage. It was a superb goal with defender Daniel Opare the main instigator.

Tagoe, a direct replacement for the suspended Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan, was also on target in Congo.

The visitors made a contest of it soon after when they reduced the deficit on 73 minutes with goalkeeper Richard Kingson to blame, before Emmanuel Badu restored Ghana’s two-goal lead in the 76th minute with a powerful shot from distance.

Congo were reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute, when Bruce Abdoulaye was sent off for a foul on Kwadwo Asamoah. It was the defender’s second booking of the night.

Chelsea midfield star Michael Essien made a long-awaited comeback to the Ghana set-up after injuries and a self-imposed exile kept him out.

He was in action for 72 minutes before he was replaced by Derek Boateng.

Serbian coach, Goran Stevanovic, extended his unbeaten run since he took charge of the team in January.

It was also Stevanovic’s first game in Ghana.
