Rassie to leave SA shores?

Cape Town - Rassie Erasmus is reportedly set to leave his post at the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and head abroad in a coaching capacity.

Erasmus, who is currently SARU’s general manager of high performance, was earlier reported to be the favourite to replace Heyneke Meyer as Springbok coach.

However, a report on Netwerk24 this past weekend indicated that Erasmus informed SARU’s executive committee last week that he does not want to become the next Bok coach.

And according to Tuesday’s Cape Argus, Erasmus has also had enough of his current SARU job.

The newspaper has been reliably informed that Erasmus made the decision after becoming disillusioned with the political infighting between the union presidents, as well as the tug of war between SARU president Oregan Hoskins and CEO Jurie Roux.

It is understood that Erasmus has received offers from clubs in Europe and Japan and that he is weighing up his options.

With Erasmus out of contention, Allister Coetzee appears the favourite for the Springbok coaching job.

Coetzee, a former Stormers coach, was confirmed to still be in contention for the job when Hoskins sent out an email to committee members, telling them to add Coetzee's name to the candidates list.

He currently coaches the Kobe Steel Kobelco Steelers in Japan, but is in Cape Town at present during the Japanese off-season.

The new Bok coach is expected be named in April, leaving him just over two months to prepare for the three-Test series in mid-year against Ireland.
