Joost lived life to the fullest - Japie Mulder

Johannesburg - Legendary Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen was spontaneous and lived his life to the fullest.

“He was truly one of the nicest guys around. I am happy and thankful that I was able to know him. He was someone who lived his life to the fullest,” Japie Mulder said on Monday.

Mulder who played his first Test match for the Springboks on July 23, 1994 against New Zealand, said he was fortunate to have called Joost a friend.

“We shared great times together and it was always nice playing against him. He was a good guy on and off the field.”

Van der Westhuizen passed away on Monday afternoon after a long battle with motor neuron disease.

The news of his death aged 45 drew a massive outpouring of tributes from the national and international sporting community.
