Cape Town – The former rugby player who allegedly head-butted a women in a bar has been identified as Leon van der Watt, Netwerk24 reports.
Van der Watt, 50, played 11 matches at wing for Free State in 1994 and also played 49 times for Griquas between 1995 and 1998.
Police spokesperson Chaka Marope confirmed Van der Watt is still on the run.
“We don’t know if he may have gone to Namibia,” said Marope.
A 39-year-old woman was left with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain after allegedly being head-butted at a bar counter by Van der Watt.
The incident, which took place in Bloemfontein on April 8, was captured on the bar’s CCTV cameras.
According to the woman, the man spoke in a rude manner to a female bartender. She then told him his behaviour was not appropriate, before the man head-butted her.
Since 2000, Van der Walt was reportedly involved in previous assaults for which he appeared in court.
