England suffer further injury setbacks

Cape Town - England head coach Eddie Jones may be without three more players for the start of the Six Nations with the news that Elliot Daly, Nathan Hughes and Ben Te'o are struggling for fitness.

Daly and Hughes suffered ankle and knee injuries respectively in Wasps’ 21-3 victory over La Rochelle in the Champions Cup last Sunday.

Both players were vital components in the Red Rose’s autumn series where they defeated Argentina, Australia and Samoa.

"When the scans came back it didn't look particularly good," Wasps’ director of rugby Dai Young said.

"Elliot has injured his ankle. He has a syndesmosis injury, which is pretty common. He is going to see the specialist to see whether any surgical intervention is required, which depending on the grade of the injury hopefully it won't be.

"Jimmy (Gopperth) and Nathan both have MCL injuries to their knees. Again, we're waiting on the specialist to let us know what is required, but we can safely say even the best picture, which is a grade one tear, will require a minimum of four weeks.”

Meanwhile, Te’o, who starred for the British and Irish Lions in June and July, has been absent since October and his director of rugby at Worcester, Gary Gold, confirmed that the centre is six weeks away.

With Billy Vunipola still out, Maro Itoje suffering a fractured jaw recently and Semesa Rokoduguni having surgery on a shoulder problem, Jones may have plenty of selection issues come February.
