Canada flyer Van der Merwe joins Newcastle

London - Canada wing DTH van der Merwe has signed to join Newcastle from next season, the English Premiership side said Wednesday.

Van der Merwe will arrive at the northeast side Welsh regional club the Scarlets on what Newcastle said was a long-term deal.

The 30-year-old has scored 23 tries in 42 Tests, and Newcastle rugby director Dean Richards said: "DTH is a top-class finisher who has been doing it on a consistent basis for club and country over a number of years now.

"He has played in three Rugby World Cups, he has averaged almost a try every other game in the PRO12 and in Europe for the past seven seasons, and he is precisely the kind of player who can help this club move up to the next level.

"We are a team who create plenty of try-scoring opportunities, but have not always had that ability to finish them off.

"DTH definitely gives us that, and we look forward to working with him when he joins us ahead of next season."

Van der Merwe is the latest addition to a Newcastle squad who will also have France centre Maxime Mermoz in their ranks for the 2017/18 season.

Newcastle's recent Premiership campaigns have mainly been about top-flight survival but they are currently seventh in the table and well away from the lone relegation place.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
