Parisse in doubt for Rugby World Cup

Rome - The Rugby World Cup status of Italy captain Sergio Parisse is uncertain after the No. 8 had fluid drained from his bruised left leg.

The Italian Rugby Federation says Parisse underwent the surgery on Monday in Paris. Recovery details will be announced over the next few days.

Parisse was injured in a 23-19 loss at Wales on Saturday in the Azzurri's final pre-tournament test.

Italy is already without flyhalf Kelly Haimona, who has not fully recovered from a broken right forearm. Haimona's Six Nations backup, the 48-cap Luciano Orquera, retired from internationals in June. Tommaso Allan has filled in at flyhalf.

Italy opens the World Cup at Twickenham against France in 11 days.
