Good day and welcome to our live coverage of this Rugby World Cup quarter-final between Pool D winners Ireland and Pool C runners-up Argentina. South Africa and New Zealand have already qualified for the semi-finals and the winners of this clash will face either Australia or Scotland, who face off in the last quarter-final later in the day, in the next round. We'll return soon with team news.
Ireland's first-choice fly-half Johnny Sexton was set to play but withdrew from this clash yesterday due to an abductor strain. Sexton has been replaced by Ian Madigan in Ireland's starting XV, with Paddy Jackson coming on to the bench. Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt initially made three changes from the team that beat France in their final pool game last weekend, with Iain Henderson starting at lock for injured captain Paul O'Connell. Blindside flanker Peter O'Mahony was also injured in that game, and is replaced by Jordi Murphy, while Chris Henry starts at openside with Sean O'Brien out through suspension. Donnacha Ryan and Rhys Ruddock come onto the bench, the latter only called into the squad last week to replace O'Mahony.
Argentina have reverted to their strongest available side for this encounter. Head coach Daniel Hourcade has made 10 changes from the team that beat Namibia in their last pool match. The whole front row is changed, with the replacements from the Namibia match (Ramiro Herrera, captain Agustín Creevy and Marcos Ayerza) starting against Ireland. Tomás Lavinini comes in for Matías Alemanno in the second row, with the latter dropping to the bench. There are also two changes in the back row, with Javier Ortega Desio out of the matchday 23 and Facundo Isa dropping to the bench, as Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe and Leonardo Senatore return. In the backs, Juan Martín Hernández reverts to inside centre to allow for the return of Nicolás Sánchez. Scrum-half Martín Landajo and Matías Moroni retain their places, though Moroni moves to outside centre. Lucas González Amorosino drops to the bench.
These sides have played each other on 15 occasions with Ireland victorious in 10 encounters. Since losing to Argentina in the 2007 RWC pool stages, Ireland have won five games on the trot against the Pumas, including a 2-0 series win on the 2014 summer tour. Their most recent meeting was a 23-17 win on June 14, 2014 in Tucuman, Argentina. This match will be Ireland''''s sixth quarter-final, together with a quarter-final play-off in 1999. Ireland have never won a knockout match at the RWC. Argentina?s starting XV at the Millennium Stadium will contain 496 caps worth of experience, their second-most experienced of this tournament after the 54-9 win over Georgia in their second Pool C match. Ireland''s starting line-up against Argentina contains 659 Test caps and has an average starting age of 28 years and 201 days, their youngest of RWC 2015 and their youngest since the 45-17 win over Romania in RWC 2003.
