Cape Town - Butch James says that he was 'devastated' when he woke up to the news that Springbok captain Jean de Villiers had been ruled out of the World Cup.
The former Springbok flyhalf, feeling slightly worse for wear after celebrating the Boks' 46-6 win over Samoa on Saturday, said via a video on his Twitter account that he would miss seeing De Villiers in a Bok jersey.
"I was really devastated for him," said James.
"He's a good friend of mine and I think he's a great ambassador for South Africa so it's really sad that he's out of the World Cup and heading home.
"I send him all the best and wish him well. All South Africans are going to miss him and I'll certainly miss seeing him out there on the field."
De Villiers announced his retirement from international rugby later on Sunday.
JDV what a legend! Devastated to hear he's out of the #RWC, all #RSA will miss seeing him out on the field!
