WP 'wanted to sign Pollard'

2012-07-04 15:04

Cape Town - Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU) CEO Rob Wagner says the union did everything they could to try and sign Handre Pollard.

Earlier this week the Blue Bulls confirmed they have secured the services of the Baby Boks and Paarl Gimnasium flyhalf.

According to the SA Rugby Facebook page, Wagner went on to say that "player movement is part of professional rugby".

born in pretoria and then negative comment after negative comment about the place. good one back bacon ps what a really poor article. really, like 5 lines. i guess the only positive is, i read the whole article, the first time ever.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-04 17:03

Lean lives in the US .. it's the 4th of July .. My guess is ATL

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-07-04 19:45

I think Rob's answer would have been more comprehensive if he told us what they tried to do. Everything possible? As far as I have it, for school players, their home union must equal or beat the offer of the other unions - thus I think it was only a case that WP did not have the vision to see that Pollard will get them their money back with one good game. Pity, but then again, you are speaking of people who let Jaque Fourie and Sadie go, just to have a crisis at centre and you speak of a coach who selected Januarie even thought the Maties' third team scrummie was better than Ricky.

  • Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-07-04 15:10

Thelo Wakefield, President of WP Rugby stated publicly less than a year ago that WP Rugby is too white. Therefore I seriously doubt that 'extra' effort went into any negotiations. Pollard will not be the last good quality player to leave the shores of WP rugby. Anyway, welcome at the BBRU, where ALL quality players are welcome!

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-04 16:53

i dont know why everyone is so concerned. apparently the WP is a factory of talent so there should be more to come for them to squander

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-07-04 16:59

@tom, also it doesn't necessarily mean if you are 'born in the Cape' that you should be a WP man - no, definitely not. I mean these youngsters grow up and see a quality side like the Bulls, can you blame them for being 'closet supporters' until they mature and make decisions of their own e.g. career??? Look at Jan Serfontein, born in PE, schooled at Grey Bloem but has ALWAYS been a Bulls fan and supporter.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-04 17:44

PE is in die noord transvaal!!! silly to expect players to stay where they are born. totally brainless i agree

  • kenny.liebenberg - 2012-07-04 15:14

Gee dit twee of drie jaar dan kla daai stormertjies ook oor hom omdat hy nou vir die Blou Bulle speel! Baie geluk Bulle hoop hy is suksesvol by julle!

  • desmond.joshua2 - 2012-07-04 15:22

get rid of wp management, they sucks

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-04 16:53

      yes they sucks

  • Claude - 2012-07-04 15:32

That sort of statement does not cut it. If that is all the executive can come up with then its time for them to go on mass. I don't think they have any idea of the build up of resentment that all the people leaving has caused. I know that they can't keep everyone but this just reeks of incompetence. WPRU must not think that winning or getting to the Super Rugby final will make everyone forget their inadequacies because they have not got there yet and in any case no one wants to let them of the hook.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-04 16:47

      en masse

  • joe.province.1 - 2012-07-04 15:49

  • Deon - 2012-07-04 15:54

He might have been more valuable than Habana, but it is too late now.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-04 16:50

habana was valuable when in the blue uniform, now, not so much

      jacques.duplessis.3785 - 2012-07-04 17:35

An u/10 wing is more valuable than habana!

  • fef.gericke - 2012-07-04 16:08

Wagner went on to say that \player movement is part of professional rugby\\r\n \r\nYes Rob,just as bowel movements are a part of everyday life...and thats exactly what u give me...a huge bowel movement!

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-04 16:51

obvs the player had a say in the matter and if he really loved living with u lot, he would have stayed, but he decided to further his career at a team that wins championships

  • dylanvdm8 - 2012-07-04 16:23

Clearly this guy wants to win silverware. Better to be at Loftus then, not The Stadium of False Hope as it has become known up north.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-04 16:52

boom dylan van de merwe delivers a bombshell

  • johan.joostesnr - 2012-07-04 16:23

Pollard has quality, that's for sure. He will soon play for the Boks, that's my prediction.

  • jack.bleck - 2012-07-04 16:58

For goodness sake people - the Stormers have had extensive injury problems this season, but have only lost 2 games. That kind of squad depth costs money. WP have extensive cover at 10 - Grant, Francis, Catrikilis and a few more whose names I can't even remember. The only place where we seem a little thin is at prop, but then I know that Kebble has already been signed. Kitshoff and Kebble are the Springbok prop pairing of the future! WP for life!!!

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-04 17:41

kebble, haha what a terrible player, scrum goes backwards everytime

  • Jonathan Groenewald - 2012-07-04 18:07

If Pollard wanted to become a springbok flyhalf,he had to go to the bulls. As we saw with the last springbok selection, bulls are favoured far above the Stormers/WP. I blame HM for this.

      Tom - 2012-07-04 22:03

Well jono u r a poens. Really u r an idiot. Where were u born? Who do u support? Thief

      bfvillet - 2012-07-05 07:17

wont be long and this will change HM will be gone by november

  • Andrew Constanti - 2012-07-04 18:44

Hehe, sorry all the next bok fly half will be Goosen. He is a cheetah and likely to move to the sharks...

      Tom - 2012-07-04 22:04

And u r Greek or italian so move to the fridge and get me an olive

  • anton.heunis - 2012-07-04 20:00

You must be joking WP/Stormers board.....stop investing in old player 30+ . Look at young talent. Dammit boys

  • anton.heunis - 2012-07-04 20:02

Cant believe you wp.....its shocking how we lose so many good young player because the bus driver are fast a sleep.....you all a joke wp board
