WP deny Pollard's departure

2012-06-20 12:13

Cape Town - A report in Die Burger on Wednesday claiming WP Craven Week captain and SA Under-20 flyhalf, Handré Pollard, has signed for the Bulls and that WP have been scrambling to sign the player since a report appeared on Sport24, has been rubbished by WP Rugby.

According to the WP Rugby website, Pollard has been part of the WP Rugby set-up from a young age, having been identified and represented WP at Under-13, Under-16 and Under-18 levels.

Last year already he was invited by Stormers coach Allister Coetzee to train with the team in November, as they prepared for this year’s Super Rugby competition, something that had not been done before with such a young player.

Pollard's father, Andre, who captained the Under-18 WP Craven Week side in 1978, also has a proud history with the Union.

WP Rugby has held numerous meetings with Andre Pollard, dating back to August 11, 2010 to secure Handré's services for senior rugby in the Province.

Andre Pollard recently confirmed to WP Rugby, and is on public record in the newspapers, that his son has not signed any contract and that they will speak to WP Rugby, his home province, before any such decision is made.

He has, however, confirmed that Handré has received offers from the Bulls and Sharks.

In terms of the SARU rules and regulations, those Unions would need to notify WP Rugby and afford the home Union the opportunity to meet or beat their offers, before any deal could be concluded.

      jono.qmann - 2012-06-20 12:43

its amazing how the bulls have a go at wp but yet they love signing and scouting wp talent!?!?

      steven.botha.14 - 2012-06-20 16:05

@nic.whathiseface.0... you are like a kid with a rattle, just noise no sense. You have no idea where all these Boys come from do you, and how many KZN boys actually go to Grey to attend High School. The same goes for lots of other A grade rugby Schools, they come from all over SA What makes rugby so special that you are not allowed to be picked or move another Franchise. I assume you never left your mommies house and nested in her garden, cause in your world and the rest of your clan it seems the chain is not very long seeing if you dare stay in a place for more than 10 minutes your are bound to rot there. Idiot

      nick.armstrong.1800 - 2012-06-20 16:15

@ Steven - no - you're the idiot mate! Obviously - I am well aware of the vagaries of modern, professional, sport - and its consequent parcity of loyalties etc... I'm well aware that money - big money - talks... Yes tossbird - I know the kids may come from KZN or where-ever - bottom line moron - they go to these schools (Grey Bloem; Paarl Boys etc) - because these are the best rugby schools in SA - with the best rugby ethos/culture - ie these boys have the BEST CHANCE OF DEVELOPING INTO QUALITY PLAYERS AT THESE SCHOOLS - instead of the schools back home in their 'home' provinces...... Duhh-Uhhh!! Too difficult for you to comprehend??? Me thinks so. B#tch at me all you want mate - the best rugby schools - ie the best developers of schoolboy rugby talent in SA - ARE Grey Bloem and schools in the Western Cape. Fact. So - my point re Grey Bloem, Free State, and schools in the Western Cape being the nurseries of SA rugby - is absolutely valid. Too difficult for you to understand?? No - go back to bed - it's past your bed time... Lol!

      steven.botha.14 - 2012-06-20 16:30

As suspected, mud brain nick keeps going with that rattle. I did not deny that those are some of the best schools if not the best, for reasons beyond you comprehension those schools are doing well which I honestly grant them. What you don't phantom is that not everyone of those who attend these schools can play for their respective provinces and will, Rugby is a national and global sport and not just played in Bloem, Pretoria or Cape Town Stadium (tongue in Cheek). Thank you for all the name calling, its great to hear the real you. By the way, please do yourself a favor and check where all the province players come from before you "rattle" again.

      jason.children - 2012-06-20 16:35

Whooaaa Nick my old son, you are gonna burst a blood vessel!!!!! @Steven......................Nick is right!

      nick.armstrong.1800 - 2012-06-20 16:36

@ Steven - I never started with the personal jibes mate - you did - read your first post again.

      steven.botha.14 - 2012-06-20 16:48

the fact is, SA is a open society and everyone is free to choose for themselves. Just because Maties is one of the best universities in SA does not mean that people who graduate there must all work in the Cape Peninsula, they are all over even in Canada! Apologies for the name calling Nick..

      nick.armstrong.1800 - 2012-06-20 16:50

@ Jason - all good mate! Lol! Was actually just pointing out an 'interesting' fact... Yeah - of course - I know there are many good rugby schools in other regions - who produce great players too - it's just unbelievable to see how many of Grey Bloem's and WP schools' best players - end up on the books of the Sharks or the Blue Bulls... And - yes - it is a fact mate - the best rugby schools are Grey Bloem and the schools here in the Western Cape.. :) This fact being borne out by either Free State Schools or WP Schools being the perennial winners of Craven Week.. :) Lekker aand mense! :)

      nick.armstrong.1800 - 2012-06-20 17:00

@ Steven - Thanks for the apologies mate. I apologise too. Cheers mate - Enjoy the Boks make it 3-0 on Sat! :)

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-06-20 18:30

Waar is Rene nou hahah! Volgens haar was dit feite....

      thomas.cannon.712 - 2012-06-20 18:59

This is the professional era, get used to it!! The provinces have a budget and a squad number which they use to the maximum, outside of that the talent is surplus!!

  • chris.holtshausen - 2012-06-20 14:00

      Henk - 2012-06-20 17:23

Rugby is 'n besigheid.

  • MaakdieBulle - 2012-06-20 14:18

We'll have to wait and see. Waar n rokie trek, is gewoonlik n vuurtjie.

      Stirrer - 2012-06-20 14:29

... of 'n ganja armpie, in die geval van Tshwane.

  • anton.bischoff - 2012-06-20 15:29

Lets wait and see, who got the signed contract

      Stirrer - 2012-06-20 16:37

Los die brannas, Anton! William-Smith? Hy was Falconetti in Rich Man Poor Man. Jy bedoel seker Small-Smith. Hougie op 9.mm - Steyn op .38 Special, Olivier op voorlaaier, Spies op spies.

      anton.bischoff - 2012-06-20 18:59

      Jy bedoel seker William Small-Smith.

  • william.w.debeer - 2012-06-20 15:29

het nog nie met wp ook geteken nie so moet nie so gou bly wees nie sharks het ook n aanbod ingesit sal maar wag en kyk waar hy gaan is n baie talentvolle speler sal n aanwins wees vir enige provinsie

  • bfvillet - 2012-06-20 15:41

who else would it be but the bulls and sharks

  • steven.botha.14 - 2012-06-20 16:12

Read the article on WPRU website.. no one has signed him yet apparently and to be fair this is sounds like very bad reporting and cheap marketing by newspapers to sell papers. So everyone please get of the soap boxes and wait for the final facts

  • grant.butler.104 - 2012-06-20 17:03

I watched this young man ' live' in the Under 20 Boks versus Argentina at Newlands....I was very impressed....huge boot but also a fine distributor and defensively sound.....will be sad if WP / Stormers lose him....

  • aduvenhage - 2012-06-20 19:13

Can somebody please (a) ask the bulls to produce the signed contract and (b) ask Pollard's dad to state unequivocally whether his son has or has not signed any contract with any union. Just stop this pointless bloody rumour mongering.

      anton.bischoff - 2012-06-21 07:00

Dont ask the Bulls ask your newspaper - Die Burger

  • JoffeyCampino - 2012-06-21 08:35

Welcome to professional rugby... regardless of where you come from, the team that plays the best rugby and pays the best always win... So to blame the Bulls for poaching star players that were under valued by the Stormers would be really silly. Instead keeping Habana at a ridiculous price was the main target, and so they lost Engelbrecht and Sadie. Same goes with Hougaard, because honestly at that time Ricky Januarie was the main man in the team. The fact that they went after a canadian called Jepp or something like that shows the faith they have in their own "academy" no wonder the players consider moves towards The Sharks and The Bulls. It is time we realize that the old days are gone and that rugby is a franchise sport, where obviously money does the talking, the better the offer the better the chance of the player leaving for that club, obviously the Lions and the Cheetahs can't match the financial power of the Stormers, Bulls and Sharks, and unfortunately the Stormers are spending money on all the wrong stuff, instead of keeping young and talented players. Don't be too surprised if Pollard joins the Bulls...based on the reasons above mentioned. It's nothing personal, it is just called doing business.
