WP's Kitshoff off to France

2012-05-09 08:08

Cape Town - Western Province flank Rohan Kitshoff is set to leave the union to play for French Top-14 club Bordeaux Bègles.

According to Die Burger, Kitshoff played as an amateur the past few years as he never had a contract with Western Province.

However, WP coach John Dobson says Kitshoff is far from amateur.

"We are losing an unbelievable person, a hardened and brilliant professional sportsman," said Dobson.

Kitshoff, 26, excelled as a ball-poacher for WP in last year's Currie Cup before he represented Namibia in the World Cup in New Zealand.

His absence cost WP dearly, as they lost possession on the ground 100 times over a four game period.

He's also had a big influence on WP making the semi-finals of this year's Vodacom Cup, but has largely been overlooked by the Stormers coaches.

"He has thus far scored the second most tries (6) in the Vodacom Cup and was our Player of the Match a couple of times.

"But he's getting married soon and one can't pay the bills and plan a future if you have to play as an amateur," said Dobson.

WP take on the Pumas in the Vodacom Cup semi-finals at Newlands on Saturday.

      Lionel - 2012-05-09 08:39

I normally choose to ignore idiots like yourself but I am going to reply on this, why would Habana,Jean de Villiers,Schalk Burger and plenty others choose to remain at WP if the ship is sinking???

      Koos - 2012-05-09 08:48

      overpaid hasbeens.

      RealTokolos - 2012-05-09 09:42

Lionel... The only reason why Habana, Schalk & Jean is still there is because no one else is interested in them. Stormpies is their last lifeline in SA rugby!!! Maybe some idiot overseas will grab them when their sell by date with Stormpies expire but no SA franchise will contract them... except maybe the Queens! The shelf life of a player is usually longer (older) in WeeeePeeee than the other unions. Chop out the old dead wood and let the new branches grow WeeeePeeee! Maybe then you will win something in a couple of decades or so!

      BlouMasjien - 2012-05-09 09:51

@Lionel, Habana took a pay cut because nobody wants him.Schalk Burger will never leave the winelands (he wont cope without the "dop stelsel")Jean's too old to play for anyone else.

      Lionel - 2012-05-09 10:23

  • stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-05-09 09:35

Stormers looking for a flanker and they let this guy go? Someone messing up badly here.

  • Neutedop - 2012-05-09 09:46

He is good, but with Schalk, Koster, Siya, Duanne, Elstead, Carr all infront of him, there is not much to do. He will get good money in France, and a counter offer would be 75% of that. He have 4 years of top flight rugby left, where Carr, Siya, Elstead all have 8+ years left, with experience already.

      Japjapjap - 2012-05-09 11:06

jap, there is not much to do...further downhill from here?? whoo whoo

  • earl.kellies - 2012-05-09 09:48

      Saffa - 2012-05-09 10:08

I choose to ignore old Tokkie - answering him and fighting with him, just gets him excited.....(and even though I don't know her, I would not wish an 'excited' Tokkie on my worst enemy....never mind his long suffering wife...)

      LaBlue - 2012-05-09 10:51

      I agree. BLUE PHOENIX GROETE!

  • ltjvrensburg - 2012-05-09 10:22

WP rugby's choices sometimes baffles me and this coming from a wp supporter.

  • Gregory - 2012-05-09 10:45

    what a waste!

  • Gregory - 2012-05-09 10:47

What a waste of talnet and especailly when Province/Stormers are short on depth. Can't blame a family man for going where the money is. All the best to him.

  • Fabian - 2012-05-09 11:38

Well done Masjien! jou legend. sterkte in Frankryk

  • Rohann - 2012-05-09 13:14

We have too many contracted loose forwards. If we give him a contract and Duane, Schalk and Koster returnes we will have another guy being paid to sit on the bench.

      Johan - 2012-05-09 14:09

How long is this guys contract? Don't you think a local without a contract would accept an offer like that? Stop thinking before you hurt yourself

      Rohann - 2012-05-09 14:25

At the moment we have 2 better younger contracted flankers than him in Kolisi and Carr. Duane, Schalk and koster must still return. So why do we want to give him a contract. I agree than Kitshoff is a good player and maybe he wanted to go to France. But that's my opinion, you are clearly the expert.

  • ronnie.kobe - 2012-05-09 15:33

This is what you will get from managers who stay in a province fool of winelands, they are half drunk most the time they cannot even see the talent that lies beneath but they go all the way across the equator to get a flanker. Stormers will remain a nearlly-team.

  • Theunis - 2012-05-10 13:00

KOM BULLE gee hom n kontrak voor hy vlieg daai outjie het baie potensiaal
