Vodacom Cup

Sithole stars in Griffons win

2015-04-25 19:51

Cape Town - A hat-trick of tries by the enterprising flanker, Martin Sithole, and a brace by the centre Vuyo Mbotho set up a 40-28 win for the Down Touch Griffons in their North section Vodacom Cup clash against the Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls at the HT Pelatona Projects Stadium in Welkom on Saturday afternoon.

According to the SuperSport website, the visitors led 17-12 at halftime, thanks to a try in the 38th minute by their hard-working flanker, Dwayne Pienaar. It was converted by Anton Beswick.

The hooker, Abraham Boonzaaier, opened the scoring for the visitors in the 12th minute and Beswick converted.

Sithole erased the deficit with his 20th minute try and flyhalf Francois du Toit converted.

Beswick’s penalty in the 24th minute handed the Limpopo Blue Bulls a well-earned lead.

Sithole crossed the whitewash in the 31st minute before Pienaar scored the late try which gave the visitors a five-point cushion at the break.

A hailstorm after halftime forced the players off the field for 10 minutes, which might have affected the focus and intensity of the Limpopo Blue Bulls.

While the Griffons flourished, the Limpopo Blue Bulls withered in the cold and wet.

Four superb second-half tries by the Griffons sank the visitors.

DOWN TOUCH GRIFFONS: Tries: Martin Sithole (3), Vuyo Mbotho (2), Wynand Pienaar. Conversions: Francois du Toit (5).

ASSUPOL LIMPOPO BLUE BULLS: Tries: Abraham Boonzaaier, Anton Beswick, Dean Gordon. Penalties: Beswick (3). Conversions: Beswick (2).
