Durban - The Sharks XV began their 2010 Vodacom Cup campaign with a 69-8 triumph over Border on Friday night at a windy Absa Stadium in Durban.
The Sharks XV led 17-5 after a scrappy first half, but then produced a more fluent second-half showing, running in ten tries for good measure.
The visitors opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a try by flank Dumisani Meslane, after fine work on the break by left wing Brad Birkholtz.
The home side, who dominated the early exchanges, then replied with a Monty Dumond penalty, before Lambert Groenewald was bundled over in the 30th minute after extensive Sharks pressure.
Some nifty footwork by Luzuko Vulindlu then produced a try out of nothing, with the Sharks XV going into the break 17-5 to the good.
The Border defence uravelled after the break, with the home side running in five attractive tries in 20 minutes, and Dumond adding four fine conversions to rattle up the 50 landmark for the Sharks XV.
A succession of substitutions then disrupted the rhythm somewhat, but the game was well in the bag for the Sharks by then.
