East London - Jandre Marais scored a hat-trick of tries as the Sharks XV cruised to a comfortable 42-0 win (half-time 14-0) over the Border Bulldogs at the Buffalo City Municipality Stadium in East London on Friday.
The visitors ran in six tries without reply with lock, and captain, Marais at the forefront of the charge while fullback Gouws Prinsloo contributed 17 points courtesy of a try and six conversions.
The Bulldogs, with a team containing nine under-21 players, were simply outgunned by a Sharks outfit boasting such luminaries as former Springbok centre Marius Joubert and exciting young talents in wing S’bura Sithole and outside centre Wandile Mjekevu.
The hosts managed to stay in the contest for the first 20 minutes before the Sharks XV finally troubled the scorers in the 28th minute when Prinsloo crossed for the opening try of the contest.
The fullback converted his own score and seven minutes later the visitors extended their lead when eighthman Lubabalo Mtembu rumbled over for another converted try.
The Sharks XV took complete control in the second half and Marais opened the scoring from the kick that began the half as he caught the ball before setting off an a bullocking run that saw him hand off one would-be tackler before barging his way past another on his way to the tryline.
Marais completed his hat-trick during the half while there was also a try for flank Brynard Stander.
Border had no answer to the visitor’s powerful forwards and were simply bullied off the ball at times while the closest they came to scoring was two failed penalty attempts from flyhalf Louis Kruger.
