Pumas crush Blue Bulls

Johannesburg - The struggling Limpopo Blue Bulls endured another dismal afternoon as they were hammered 88-0 by the Pumas in their North Section Vodacom Cup match at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium, in Polokwane, on Saturday.

The men from the Limpopo, yet to register a point in the competition, were powerless to stop the table-topping Pumas, who ran in 14 tries on the day.

Winger Ashwin Scott and captain Jaco Bouwer were the men to grab the headlines, with each securing a hat-trick of tries to put the cherry on top of yet another comprehensive performance.

The Mpumalanga outfit now lead the standings by five points, with a place in the play-offs all but secured.

Limpopo, in contrast, trail the seventh-placed Valke by seven points, and have just two games remaining in which to clinch a maiden victory since joining the competition.

Scott opened the scoring as he dotted down in the seventh minute. Bouwer joined him on the scoresheet five minutes later, and when tighthead De Jay Terblanche crashed over in the 18th minute, the visitors enjoyed a 15-0 lead.

Bouwer and Scott wrapped up their braces to complete the scoring for the first half, and with flyhalf Justin van Staden finding his range with the boot, the score at the break was 29-0 and the bonus point secured.

The second stanza was to turn into a massacre for the hosts, as inside centre Dewald Pretorius crossed the tryline just a minute after play resumed, with eighthman Doppies le Roux helping himself to a try shortly after.

Scott then grabbed his hat-trick before Hennie Skorbinski's try in the 61st minute took the score past 50.

The humiliation for the home side was complete in the final quarter, as they conceded a miserable 40 points -- including the hat-trick try for skipper Bouwer.

Scorers:

Pumas: Tries: Ashwin Scott (3), Jaco Bouwer (3), De Jay Terblanche (2), Dewald Pretorius, Doppies le Roux, Hennie Skorbinski, Johan Pretorius, Pule Sibiya, Bernardo Botha; Conversions: Justin van Staden (5), Johan Pretorius (3), Bernardo Botha.
