Leopards lash Limpopo

Umzimuhle - Ian Heyns scored four tries as the Leopards XV ran rampant on their way to a 113-3 (half-time 47-3) victory over the Limpopo Blue Bulls in their Vodacom Cup match at Oppenheimer Stadium in Umzimuhle on Friday.

Right wing Heyns crossed for four tries and flank Rhyk Welgemoed notched up a hat-trick of tries as the Leopards ran in 17 tries unanswered tries.

Former Springbok flyhalf Andre Pretorius ended with a personal haul of 29 points courtesy of a try and 14 conversions.

It was a match to forget for the Limpopo Blue Bulls, making their tournament debut this year, and they could only replay with a solitary penalty from fullback Bronwyn Craill.

Limpopo had actually opened the scoring, thanks to Craill's second minute penalty but it was to be their only moment of success as they sunk to their second consecutive loss this season on a cloudy and cool afternoon.

The Leopards XV, who lost their opening match of the season 45-15 to the Golden Lions, wrapped up the bonus point for scoring four tries inside 23 minutes thanks to tries from hooker Jaques Vermaak, centre Adriaan Engelbrecht, right wing Danie Dames and Heyns.

The second half was even more one-sided as the hosts ran in 10 tries against their outgunned opponents who simply had no answer to the home team's pace and power.

Scorers:

Leopards XV - Tries: Jaques Vermaak (2), Adriaan Engelbrecht (2), Danie Dames, Ian Heyns (4), Edmar Marais (2), Rhyk Welgemoed (3), Andre Pretorius, Johan Smith, Malherbe Swart; Conversions: Pretorius (14).

Limpopo Blue Bulls - Penalty: Bronwyn Craill.
