Pretoria - Jannie Boshoff scored a brace of tries as Griquas thumped the Blue Bulls 36-17 (half-time 19-10) in their Vodacom Cup match at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

The visitors were full value for their victory as they ran in six tries to two with right-wing Boshoff scoring a try in each half as the Griquas dominated the tight phases of the contest with their forwards having the upper hand over their opponents in the scrums and lineouts.

The Blue Bulls’ handling let them down on numerous occasions which effectively stifled any momentum they tried to build up.

The Griquas established early dominance as they raced in to a 12-0 lead thanks to tries from Boshoff and inside centre Matthew Rosslee with Rosslee’s effort coming from some sharp work from the visitors after an errant Blue Bulls pass.

The hosts opened their account in the 11th minute thanks to a penalty from flyhalf Wesley Dunlop but as the match entered the second quarter the Griquas re-established a healthy lead as scrumhalf Jacques Coetzee sniped over for a converted try.

The Blue Bulls faced going into the break trailing by 16 points but on the stroke of half-time they finally breached the Griquas’ defence thanks to a fine try from left-wing Clayton Blommetjies who beat two would-be tacklers on his way to a converted try.

The home team may have fought their way back in to the contest but the second half belonged to the Griquas thanks to Boshoff’s second try and a converted score from lock Ligtoring Landman.

Blue Bulls right-wing Sampie Mastriet scored a consolation try for the hosts but shortly before the final whistle Rudi Vogt, a backline replacement for the Griquas, put the icing on a fine victory with a late try.

Blue Bulls:

Tries: Clayton Blommetjies, Sampie Mastriet
Conversions: Wesley Dunlop, Jurgen Visser
Penalty: Dunlop

Tries: Jannie Boshoff (2), Mathew Rosslee, Jacques Coetzee, Ligtoring Landman, Rudi Vogt
Conversions: Marnitz Boshoff (3)
