Griffons end campaign on high

Johannesburg - The Griffons have scored a emphatic bonus point 41-17 victory over the Valke in their Vodacom Cup game of the competition in the Barnard stadium in Kempton Park on Friday afternoon.

It was the last match of the tournament for both sides.

Scoring six tries in total, the Griffons led proceedings from start to finish with full back Wynand Pienaar and and flanker Martin Sithole both scoring two five pointers.

The Valke started at a steady pace, taking the early lead via a good try by hooker Devlin Hope. The hosts' happiness was short lived as Griffons full back Pienaar went on to score his first try of the game to draw the scores level at five points each.

Valke winger Andrew van Wyk was yellow carded ten minutes from half time and the Griffons used the overlap to score their second try of the game. Flanker Sithole crossed the white wash for what was to be the first of his two tries, with fly half Franna du Toit converting to give the visitors a lead of 12-5 at the break.

Both the Valke and Griffons then went on to score in the second half with Pienaar getting his second five pointer, which he converted himself. Eighth man Nicky Steyn also went over for the visitors, with Du Toit again converting.

Then it was the turn of replacement back Ettienne Taljaard to score for the Valke, with Kyle Hendricks converting. Flanker Vince Gwavu dotted down shortly after, but fly half Cecil Dumond pulled the conversion wide.

The Griffons had the final say though, with replacement scrum half Inus Kritzinger scoring and Du Toit converting before Sithole dotted down for his second five pointer to give the visitors a good victory.
