Johannesburg - The Griffons borrowed a bit of magic from Houdini in Tembisa on Saturday as they beat the Falcons by 37-34 in a Vodacom Cup match when they managed to claw their way back from the death after trailing by 34-9 at one stage.

Glaring into the sun for the most part of the day, the Griffons were outplayed by a Falcons side which controlled the game for all of 70 minutes and scored four tries in the process.

The visiting team from Welkom looked flat-footed and not really interested in playing rugby in a scrappy game full of niggles.

But, in the last ten minutes, the Purple People Eaters decided to do what works best, and started getting the ball to the fast players out wide and Cecil Afrika showed his magic when he scored three quick tries and also converted one of them.

When Taro Maarman took the field, he also took matters into his own hands and scored a try for his effort.

Points:

Falcons: Tries: Pierre Foord, Liebrecht Gericke, Theo Becker, Reg Muller. Conversions: Jeff Perkins (4). Penalties: Perkins (2).

Griffons: Tries: Cecil Africa (3), Taro Maarman. Conversions: Petri Kunz (2), Afrika. Penalties: Hugo Kleynhans (3).
