Johannesburg - The Golden Lions beat the Blue Bulls 24-12 in a Vodacom Cup North Section match at the Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg on Friday. The Golden Lions led 24-0 at halftime.

The Lions started the match like a house on fire. Flyhalf Ashlon Davids opened the scoring with a penalty goal for the home team after a ruck infringement by the Blue Bulls.

Former Blue Bulls scrumhalf Lohan Jacobs scored the first try for the Lions after his team turned over the ball in the Bulls' 22. Jacobs snuck around the blindside and went over in the corner and Davids added the extras. In fact, the Bulls struggled to retain ruck possession and the Lions scored a further two tries from turnover ball.

Lions wing Anthony Volmink finished off a team effort in the corner with Davids kicking the conversion to extend the Lions' lead to 17-0 with just over a quarter of the match played.

Fullback Damian Engledoe had the last say for Lions before the halftime break as turnover ball deep in the Lions' half culminated in Engledoe's try after some silky passes. Davids sunk the conversion to give the Lions a healthy 24-0 lead at the break.

The Bulls emerged from the tunnel a different team as they scored two quick tries through replacement wing Kefentse Mahlo. Both tries came from running the ball through the hands. Bulls pivot Kobus Marais could only convert one of his attempts.

The rest of the match deteriorated into a circus of knock-ons and penalties with both teams threatening the score but failing to execute. The match ended 24-12 in favour of the Golden Lions, which sees them momentarily top the North Section log.
