EP Kings dominate Cavaliers

Johannesburg - The EP Kings turned on the style in the second half as they recorded a 44-10 (half-time 19-10) victory over the hapless Boland Cavaliers in their Vodacom Cup match at the Central Sports Grounds in Citrusdal on Saturday afternoon.

According to the superpsport.com website, going into the encounter both teams had only recorded a solitary victory each in the competition. The Cavaliers had conceded fifty points in both their last two matches, 52 - 12 against the Cell C Sharks XV and 62-19 against the GWK Griquas. The Kings had lost their way against the SWD Eagles last week, going down 31-10.

Former Junior Springbok Aidon Davis scored his side’s first try of the afternoon with Hansie Graaff adding the extras. With Gary van Aswegen, Tony Jantjies and George Whitehead all on the injury list it fell on Graaff’s shoulders to steer the team from the pivot position.

Boland fullback Granville Adams then scored and converted a try to draw the two teams level after just over a quarter of the match. His opposite number, Siviwe Soyizwapi, then scored a try to make it 12-7. Davis grabbed his brace shortly thereafter with Graaff extending the lead to 19-7.

A penalty by Adams narrowed the halftime gap to 19-10 but it proved to be the last act of scoring by the Cavaliers.

Graaff kicked a penalty after the break before fiery flanker Eital Bredenkamp went over for the bonus point score. Despite Graaff missing the conversion the Kings were cruising at 27-10 after 54 minutes.

Graaff then showed why EP Kings coach Mzwandile Stick had faith in him shortly thereafter by scoring and converting his own try. Going into the final quarter the visitors had a big lead of 34-10 and it got even worse for the Cavaliers when Davis grabbed his third to complete a hat-trick of tries.

Reserve scrumhalf Dylon Frylinck then made it seven tries for the Kings when he dotted down with the match nearing its end.

Next week the Cavaliers face the Border Bulldogs at the Davidson Rugby Stadium in Alice with both teams desperate to avoid the wooden spoon in the South Section.

Western Province, Griquas, the Free State XV and the SWD Eagles all qualified above the Kings in the South Section and the match against the Cell C Sharks XV at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth will only be for pride.
