Boland walloped in Bredasdorp

Johannesburg - The Boland Cavaliers got their Vodacom Cup campaign off to the worst possible start on Saturday when Griquas gave them a convincing hiding in Bredasdorp, running out 42-25 (half-time 21-6) victors.

Griquas captain Wesley Wilkins scored two of his side's six tries, while fullback Rudi Vogt slotted all his conversion kicks.

It was however Boland who drew first blood, when fullback Jacquin Jansen kicked a penalty in the 12th minute.

Boland’s only lead of the match was short-lived, however, as winger Wilmaure Louw scored Griquas' first try only two minutes later.

Although it was one-way traffic from then on, the Northern Cape side's discipline was a problem throughout the game and will have to be rectified as a matter or urgency.

Steph Roberts was shown yellow for repeated infringements in the 25th minute and Jansen took the three points at hand. But, unfortunately for Boland, they trusted their kicker too little in this match.

Too many times the Bolanders chose to seek a better field position with line kicks, rather than kicking for posts.

Meanwhile, with only 14 players on the field, Simon Westraadt scored Griquas' second try, and Wilkins opened his account two minutes prior to the break. Vogt secured a lead of 21-6.

With Boland coach Loffie Eloff not known as a man to spare the whip at halftime, one would've expected better play from his side from the start of the last 40 minutes.

But it was that evergreen winger Fabian Juries who got his career with Griquas off to a familiar with an excellent try in the 45th minute.

That proved to be enough of a wake-up call for the home side, as PJ van Zyl scored a try from a well constructed lineout.

Unlike in the first half, Boland made use of their numbers when Jonathan Francke scored a try in the 63rd minute after Griquas flyhalf Earl Rose was sent to the bin for a dangerous tackle.

The score was 28-18 with 15 minutes to go but two more tries for Griquas via former Maties Matthew Dobson and Wilkins sealed the deal.

Junior Bester's try in the 76th was too little too late for a Boland side who played against 14 players for 20 minutes, but made very little use of it when they were not that far behind in the first half.

Scorers:

Boland 25 – Tries: PJ van Zyl, Jonathan Francke, Junior Bester. Conversions: Jacquin Jansen (2). Penalties: Jansen (2).

Griquas 42 – Tries: Wilmaure Louw, Simon Westraadt, Wesley Wilkins (2), Fabian Juries, Matthew Dobson. Conversions: Rudi Vogt (6).
