Boland pip FS at the death

Johannesburg - Boland Cavaliers fullback Jacquin Jansen kicked a 50m penalty after the full-time hooter to give his side a nail-biting 32-30 (half-time 10-10) win over the Free State XV in their Vodacom Cup rugby match in Bredasdorp, on Saturday.

With his side trailing 30-29, and time up on the stadium clock, Jansen calmly stepped up and slotted the long-distance penalty much to delight of his team-mates and home fans.

It was his first place-kick of the day and it was one that handed Boland their first victory of the campaign and Free State their first defeat.

The match was a dramatic and closely-fought affair for the duration of the 80 minutes but it was the underdogs Boland who came through in the end against a young Free State team despite losing centre Jonathan Francke for 10 minutes in the second half due to a yellow card offence.

Both teams registered a bonus point as a result of scoring four tries and only Jansen's penalty proved the difference.

Jansen also dotted for two tries after the break but the try of the match was scored by Free State left wing Kholo Ramashala.

The move was started by centre Barry Geel who broke from inside his own 22m area and evaded several defenders until midway into the Boland half before offloading to fullback Philip Burger who in turn passed to Ramashala to score under the posts.

Scorers:

Boland - Tries: Jacquin Jansen (2), Jonathan Francke; Zandre Jordaan. Conversions: Elgar Watts (3); Penalties: Elgar Watts, Jacquin Jansen.

Free State XV - Tries: Marcel van der Merwe, Ockie van Zyl, Kholo Ramashala, Mauritz Henderson; Conversions: Marco Mason (2); Penalties: Marco Mason (2).
