Tuks open Varsity Cup v Maties at Loftus

Cape Town - The 2017 edition of the Varsity Cup gets underway on Monday, January 30.

The competition celebrates 10 years of rocking rugby as nine universities battle it out for top honours.

Tournament organisers have been working closely with each university and their respective vice-chancellors, not only ensuring the completion of fixtures but more importantly recognise and acknowledge the challenges that universities are facing.

“The excitement of the tenth season is tangible amongst universities,” says Varsity Cup CEO, Duitser Bosman.

“Varsity Cup understands the challenges that the universities are facing, across the country. Contingency measurements have been put in place by each university after lengthy discussions with each vice chancellor. The universities have been very helpful and accommodating.”

Safety and sensitivity is a key priority and the competition understands the challenges that universities are facing and as a result have extended their full cooperation in working closely with the tertiary institutions.

The addition of a ninth university, Wits, sees the 2017 tournament kicking off a bit earlier than previous years.

Three universities including UCT, NMMU Madibaz and UP-Tuks will have alternative venues for their opening matches.

UP-Tuks will be playing their opening match against Maties at Loftus Versveld due to the field being used as a student registration location, while UCT will be playing their first game at Florida Park in Ravensmead.

Exams will be taking place in the UCT Sports Hall, which is located right next to the rugby field.

The NMMU Stadium is being upgraded and as a result, Madibaz will be playing all their matches away.
