Maties thump CUT

Stellenbosch - Maties got off to the best possible start in the opening round of the Varsity Cup when they comfortably overcame CUT at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Maties were far too strong for the student from Bloemfontein as they posted 40 unanswered points in the 80 minutes to make an early statement in this year’s Varsity Cup. The strong wind the men from Stellenbosch played with in the first half proved to be a key factor in their 26-0 half-time lead.

An early five-point try by captain, Beyers de Villiers, set the tone for the rest of his forwards who went on to dominate the CUT pack. Two tries by No 8, Kobus van Dyk, in quick succession and a great finish by flyhalf, Ernst Stapelberg, secured the bonus-point before half-time.

CUT failed to use the wind to their advantage in the second half as Maties continued to look the more threatening of the two teams.

A powerful maul in the CUT 22m area led to hooker, Craig Corbett, diving over in the right hand corner to take the score to 31-0 after 55 minutes.

The wind continued to limit both teams’ handling, but with two minutes remaining, fullback, Craig Barry, broke through the CUT defence from the halfway line and off-loaded brilliantly to replacement wing, Edwill van der Merwe, who crossed the line for the game’s only seven-point try. Stapelberg slotted his fourth conversion of the night to hand his team a 40-0 victory.

Maties will celebrate their ability to use the wind to their advantage, while CUT will lament their inability to record a single point in one of the more one-sided games of the day.
